Battery Type- AGM fitted to non Stop/Start D4? |
|
Hi All, first post in this forum- but not new to LRs.
My Disco4 (2013/63) was getting a little slow to turn over on cold mornings. I have not bothered to do any proper maintenance yet as I've only had it since August, it's ok and still under an LR warranty. However, after my IiD Tool arrived last week, it was indicating only 11.7v after a few minutes without the engine running.
I'm having trouble with the failed Stop/Start AGM battery on my RS6 too, and so have researched a lot recently, about modern battery types, etc.
I had a spare (ordinary) new battery, so fitted it and everything is ok, but noticed that the battery that came off was an AGM type, commonly fitted only to Stop/Start vehicles. My 2013 D4 does not have Stop/Start as far as I'm aware (certainly never seen it happen, nor do I have a button to turn it off).
Assuming the battery was original (it is Jaguar/LR branded), might they have fitted an AGM battery originally (as I see that slightly later D4s had Stop/Start)? Of course, there's no guarantee that it is original to the vehicle.
Regards,
Andy.

LR replaced my MY11 battery under warranty with an AGM battery. It lasted 7 years until recently without issue. I have replaced with another AGM battery. D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

Just yesterday I replaced I assume the original AGM battery in my MY12 D4 with another AGM.
Incidentally, I sourced a battery from a relatively local independent motor factors shop. Before collecting, I didn't know what brand, just that they had one compatible with my car (old one was dead, couldn't even jump start it). A mate said I should check eurocarparts as they have discounts usually. They were showing as £469 for Exide AGM battery. When I collected the battery from my indie shop, realised it was the exact same battery that ECP were offering, but I paid £210! What a rip off. My MY10 D4 didn’t come with an AGM, but I had the dealer swap it for one.
By the time the 8 speed box came along AGM batteries were standard fit. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

There is no "think" about it, they are far superior, they charge faster and at lower volts than a wet cell, they can be tipped upside down without leakage, they will work on their side they are far better at charging on a short journeys.
There is no reason why you can't use the wet cell in place of the AGM, it will just take longer to charge on short journey and may need supplementary charging if you don't do any long journeys particularly in winter.
If you have an Iid tool you can set the CCF up for a wet cell battery, this will increase the output from the alternator to a max of 15.6volts on first start up which will help the wet cell to charge faster, it should be changed back if you later change back to an AGM as the max most can take is 14.6volts AGM It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I'm sure and no i don't want to know . But faced with a car that didn't work and I needed to use today, I had no chance to shop around. Just pleased I didn't settle for the higher price, so I'm happy MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff
