Glow plug diagnostics - No voltage at fuses |
|
Hi,
I've been scratching my head ever since my Disco failed to start one frosty morning, and since then has been absolutely fine (even in sub zero).
I've been trying to prove the glow plugs etc, but am a bit confused now. After checking for amps on the cables during ignition, voltage on the plugs, testing relays (they work ok on the bench) and eventually working up to the 50amp fuses, I have found I am not even get any voltage in the fuse socket. So at the moment, it looks like my whole glow plug circuit is dead :S.
Question: Is the 50amp fuse on the glow plug side or other side of the relay. I.e. if I test for voltage on the fuse socket, will I see anything if the glow plugs / relays are not live?
If the fuse is not on the glow plug side, then I might have a bigger problem. So the next question would be, why have I got no power to the glow plugs?
Lastly, I managed to start the Disco with the fuses pulled out. It was no different to having the fuses in. Just how cold can it get before the glow plugs are really needed?
Muchos confusion.

Pull fuses and check for resistance to ground.
See what you get.

At the risk of dredging up and old thread, did you ever get a resolution to this. I’m seeing the same symptoms on mine I think. 2008 Disco3 2.7 Tdv6 HSE

Long story short.......all 6 of my glow plugs were bust. The circuit was fine. Best place to test is at the glow plug wires using a clamp meter as it's very unlikely to be a wiring fault but still go ahead and bench test relays etc. I found all my plugs were drawing no current with the clamp meter.
I had the body off to take the heads off and replace all 6 plugs as at least 3 of them were stuck. One of them had so much hard carbon on the probe that it would come out of the head even if it did unscrew.
About £3000 all in for that job (we did some others there while we were there too such as brake lines, water pump, body mounts)
