D4 Rear Brake Pads (Info you should read) |
|
Guys
had a bulletin pop up today which i think the info should be passed on to help later down the line
it has been identified that between chassis numbers
AA513326 - AA547440 Discovery 4
There were 2 different types of brake calipers fitted to the REAR of the D4
either aluminium or cast iron (They were only fitted in pairs so you should not have mixed axles sets)
Now that on it's own is no real issue but the pads are slightly different in design meaning you need to be aware if you buy pads from a dealer as to which calipers you have and which pads to use
Cast Iron caliper uses pads
LR021316 Marked (FER4212FF)
Aluminium uses pads
LR015519 Marked (FER4258FF)
After Chassis number AA547440 they were ALL fitted with cast iron calipers
Now moving forward in vehicle ownership, and if at some point calipers need to be replaced again they recommened that THEY ARE NOT MIXED, so be warned, maybe some dealers may not pick this up so store this info in you noggin for later and question them as to whether they are aware of this.
I'm trying to up a pdf file of pictures of the 2 calipers and pads so i'll edit this post with the link in a while

TLO
Just wanted to say thanks for this info. Mine is just about to go in to have the pads done at a local garage and I was able to let them know the part numbers
Would have been highly irritating to have had them get the wrong pads and have the car in for another day whilst they sourced the correct ones.
Thanks again

Thanks TLO
Mine are the Aliminimum ones..... are you offering extra discount to compensate for the difference
why did LR change to Cast Iron Calipers - Am I to expect caliper problems later on in life if I have the Aliminimum ones ? Duncan

to Nick as ever
Wasn't even aware of this when I ordered my new discs & pads from him (but did give him my chassis number )
Just checked & he sent me the correct (alluminium) pads that match what I have on
He truly has magic powers Cheers Ian

Thanks for the info, very important particularly if it is possible to actually fit the wrong type.
Just one point I doubt very much the callipers you call cast iron are in fact cast iron But Cast steel. While cast iron has excellent wear properties in the apropiate situation i.e. brake disks, it has no impact strength and will shatter very easily, cast Steel has high impact and is a mutch stronger and more expensive material. Cheap spanners are made from cast steel, a spanner made from cast iron(chineese) would snap the first time it was used with force.
Hope I don't lose my discount by pointing this out It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Are the different pads actually different shapes i.e. it is impossible to fit the wrong ones or is it the pad material that is different meaning that you could easily fit the wrong ones?
Are the rear discs the same on both?
How can I easily tell by looking at the calliper which one I have (my VIN is towards the end of the range that Nick says could have either fitted).
The link on the end of Nick's post which probably contains the answers doesn't seem to work for me
Thanks

I am sure the Ferrous callipers are in fact (SG) spheroidal graphite iron, which is stronger and more malleable than Grey Cast Iron (Cylinder Blocks etc) .SG will bend not fracture the same as Grey Iron. A lot of suspension arms and knuckles are SG.

FWIW I have the short run aluminum calipers. They accept either pad. I used some third party pads and they fit fine (Power Stop ceramic).
Damn pistons wouldn't retract though. I had to remove each and use my bench vise to get them back in.
