A de rated merlin pushing out about 800 hp was used to power British tanks at the end of WW2. It also was used to power Russian built scrap when the original engines gave up on the trucks supplied by them to build the Aswan dam. The union jacks on the engines were removed so as not to embarrass the Russians. Without them it would never have been completed. The engines were assembled using reclaimed parts from salvaged engines. So the merlin lives on somewhere!

That would be the Meteor (and later the Meteorite which was a V8 version of the same engine). The Meteor was rated at 550-650bhp. The Meteorite was about half that power.

The Meteorite was used to power a post-war tank transporter that transported the Meteor-powered Centurions and Conquerors around. A nice bit of symmetry. Thumbs Up

The Antar was followed by a lorry full of squaddies and Jerry cans to refuel it every few miles.

Not the only RR Aero-engined road car.

?t=67

Google tells me it was actually a Meteor engine and not a Merlin.

I would have thought a full-on tanker would have been required! An 18L V8 dragging around an 80t combination of Conqueror plus the trailer and the tractor unit is always going to be "a bit thirsty" Laughing .

Post war film about Rolls Royce and Merlin production.

Might be useful for those thinking of fitting a Merlin to their Disco... Rolling with laughter
