I am looking for comment from anyone who is running either of the above mapping software in OZ - things like:-
1. ease of use;
2. features and value;
3. compatibility with GPS.
Has anyone tried one over the other?

Tristan - I've been a user of OZIEXPLORER for anout 5 years now - on PC and PDA - love it, but don't have experience with others, so can't compare.
Have found it to have all the features I'd want, and it has connected with several different GPS used so far.

I have no experience with Trackmaster - but have used Quo Vadis , Fugawi and Ozi . Ozi wins hands down for use of use and features

Monty already has the premium sat nav, so I dont need road navigation, and this GPS plugged into my laptop seems the most cost effective and unobtrusive way to do what I want (off road mapping and trip planning). OK(ish) - I'll email you what I've got. After our conversation, I am now thinking I might be rushing it in parts. This is the reason that I am trying to get some decent mapping software and maps.
With trackmaster, can you effectivley ask it, say "I am leaving Marree and going to Oodnadatta - how far is it?"

TDMP - Do you mean TrackRanger Trakmaster is my van.
I originally had OziExplorer and a couple of things p-----d me off so I also purchased TrackRanger.
In my last long trip I did all navigation by TrackRanger and found it very simple to use and satisfied my needs. Others had OziExplorer and they had no troubles either.
I have found that the support from TrackRanger with any little problem/questions is excellent in both response times and explanations.
Recently I have been using OziExplorer for some other planning and am coming to grips with it more.
In answer to your question it is really what you feel comfortable with. Both programs have different things that I found useful - now if they both incorporated all their niceties into one it would be a great program.
PS - I am using an old Gamin Emap as my GPS. Retired Bob

Havn't posted the details yet but just fitted a Xenarc 7 inch touch screen monitor wehich controls my lap top in the back. I already have oziexplorer CE on my Garmin M4 but can run full oziexplorer with 3D on the laptop.
I stuck a serial GPS antenna to the underside of the high level brake cover when I replaced it. I reccon a small unit may fit with some sealant on it by pushing through the hole and jamming it in place until sealant has cured.

Just did a very quick exercise using distance measurement on TrackRanger on a fairly small screen ( not enlarged to take out bends) using straight lines between points. Distance came to 385 km. If I increased the size of the map it would have been more accurate. That exercise from loading to distance took two minutes. Will try a similar exercise on Ozi later.
Just did the same on Ozi and got 379 km - took a little bit longer. Must admit that the TrakRanger was easier to use and manipulate on the maps.
If I get time in the next few days I will try with larger scale maps just to see the difference

Hi TDMP,
Like others, I have been using Oziexplorer for years. While it is an Australian (Brisbane) product, it is well-regarded throughout the world. However, as RetiredBob indicates, it may not be for everyone. Nonetheless, I have found it to be an excellent package. Also, updates are free downloads. (I hope this is still available to new users.)
Regarding your points:
1. Ease of use
I have found Oziexplorer, incredibly easy to use. Loading in scanned maps is a "breeze", it's easy to plot routes, tracks & waypoints & upload/download them between your gps (mine's a basic Garmin eTrex) & computer. I have also used it in "tracking" mode allowing the gps-read position to be downloaded to the computer in real time, allowing you to follow the route that you are taking. This "Tracking" can be saved to your computer for future ref.
2. Features & Value
The features are too great to be described here. See 1. above for some guidance.
Value is in the "eye of the beholder" (to abuse a phrase). As I haven't used TrackRanger but the sales of Oziexplorer around the world, I see as testament to its quality & value.
3. Compatibility with gps.
I don't know what gps you have, or are considering, but Oziexplorer supports all major brands. If you already have a gps, let me know & I will check. If you don't let us know which gps that you are interested in.
