Basically it's possible, but you need addition box. In my case I wished to have CarPlay on satnav screen (and save 4x4 info) and Ido that. I was use kit from Naviplus. They have gvif and netplay box. (iPhone connecting to netplay as CarPlay and then netplay box provide video signal to gvif)

I bought it at http://naviplus.com.au but its not a cheap and not so easy to install. Maybe better (and cheaper) way it's a noname Chinese screen.LR4 V8 5.0 HSE Lux

If you remove the link you made between L & R on the Aux dummy plug it'll sound a lot better. The socket shorts both L&R to ground when there is nothing in the hole. You only need something in there to open those switches (even a bit of wood does that). By doing what you did you've shorted L to R and it'll sound "a bit flat". Otherwise great write up.
On the basis of your write up I bought the same kit and installed it pretty much as you did. They've made some "improvements" to the plug and play harness, and with a bit of tweaking it was a nice install. The new harness sources power from the antenna power output on the back of the head unit and mine didn't have enough grunt to make it all work, so that needed "fixing".
