Once again this website has proved itself invaluable to any D4 owner.
Took the car out this morning and everything works fine until I get back home. Switched off the engine in the normal way and get out of the car. Pressed the driver’s door handle button to activate the locking mechanism and……. Nothing. Okay maybe that button needs replacing, so tried the rear door button……. again nothing. Press the lock button on the remote, same again, nothing. Jump back into the car and try and restart it. Smart Key Not Found. Not so smart. Try the wife’s key and still nothing. Replace the battery in my key, same result.
By now I’m nervous and already counting the pennies on how much this will take to repair. But all is not lost, still got my ace in the hole. Dive back into the house and log onto DISCO4.COM, bash in Smart key not found and start educating myself.
So let’s try a Hard Reset and see if that clears the problem. Minutes later and it’s bonnet up and disconnect the battery, short out the leads and back in to have a coffee. Ten minutes later reconnect everything and all is back to normal. Key works, engine starts and the buttons on the doors now work. Me, incredibly happy bunny .
This website is gold to anyone who runs a disco and even the passive search ability results in a quick fix for most problems. Can’t thank the site Admin or the contributors enough for the amount of wisdom I’ve picked up from here over the years, not to mention the money I’ve saved as well.
Now let’s see how long it is until the next issue comes up, and as always my first instinct will be to come here.

Hey there!
I'm in the same boat as you were. Both smart keys stopped working at the same time. Replaced the fob batteries several times with brand new, branded, lithium batteries, no joy. Car is booked in with the dealer tomorrow.
I have done a hard reset and that didn't fix the issue. I have since replaced the main car battery and that has fixed my stop/start (that died a couple of years ago) but no joy on the smart key. Will try a hard reset again now I've got the new battery installed.
One question, for a stop/start Disco with two batteries, is the hard reset process the same, or do I disconnect both batteries, short the terminals on both, reconnect and see what happens? Is there a specific order to this, or will any order do?
Thanks. MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

Hi Peteyd, mine doesn't have the second stop/start battery, so just the main battery to disconnect for me. Did read somewhere else that for those cars with the two batteries you should disconnect them both and make sure to short out the leads to dissipate the condensors and such.

I'm currently at the "drinking coffee" stage of my 2-battery hard reset! MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

The coffee was lovely. The car, sadly, refuses to find the smart keys even after a hard reset of both batteries. Off to the dealer tomorrow for further assessment. MY16 D4 Graphite in Loire Blue

Funnily enough both my keys went off the radar this weekend.
Had to access via emergency lock. Disconnect battery as alarm was going off.
Hard reset later and all was well again. Spooky!

I had exactly the same:
1. No warning
2. Found car unlocked
3. When tried to start, got ‘Smart Key no recognised’ message (same for both keys)
4. Got car started by holding key fob against ridges under steering column
5. Could not lock car
After a hard reset (disconnect battery and short cables), all back to normal.
Interestingly after 1-5 above happened, I left the car overnight and battery was dead next morning, but started from jump start.
I have had a couple of dead batteries lately, even though it is quite new and the RAC said it seemed in good order.
