Disco no more
Thanks for all the help and advise everyone. The Disco has been the nicest car I have ever driven but she is going after the weekend. I just can't worry about things going wrong all of the time and I'm not in a financial position to pick up the pieces when they do. Great forum, cheers everyone

That was short and sweet (and a little sour perhaps?)... what are you getting instead ? I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Such a shame - but this is a common attitude for quite a lot of people.
However, engine failure aside - I do believe that if your willing to get the rights tools and have a go, they’re not bad.
I jumped in the deep end buying mine, but once you pluck up the courage up and have a go, it’s very rewarding.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

D3's and D4's appear to be money pits now - you have to have deep pockets either to pay for appropriate maintenance and/or pay for (engine) catastrophes as they happen.
But you always needed deep pockets to buy them brand new, under warranty, in the first place.
Despite declining second hand prices meaning they've come within the range of the lower end of the buyers market, they still all come with the financial health warning above.Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

They do require more time and or money to look after than a “normal car”. Which is understandable when you consider how complex they are. I always think of them as part car, part agricultural vehicle.

To be fair, they are heading into early Range Rover P38 territory. They are a great car when they work properly, but will take a decent home mechanic and a comprehensive knowledge base to run one. If you can provide both of those you have a car that will do so much.

I dropped my Defender off for some work (new gearbox output shaft) and the D3 I have come home in has 246,000 miles and runs beautifully with everything working as it should...d4 HSE
