Self build BBQ / fire pit

In one of my random moments recently I’ve been looking at a fire pit for when I’m camping in the D3. I’ve seen normal ones where people have strapped them to the spare wheel, or dropped them on the roof rack but thought I’d give it a go creating my own. Probably been done before, but haven’t seen one so thought I’d drop the photos and a bit of description on, total cost was around £25 but that’s as I had to buy everything fresh.

So I thought I’d try using a metal Jerry can as the base, picked a used one up for £10 off fleabay and with fire extinguisher on standby, marked out as big a hole as I could and used an angle grinder to cut it out

Used a 600 degree BBQ spray paint to clean the can up, and the added steel reinforced rubber to the lid, this was to fill back in the gap the angle grinder left when closed

Pot riveted the hinge and a couple of spring clips on the front to secure the door and the fitted 10mm thread rivet nuts to the back side.

The rivet nut allow me to use 10mm bolts as removable legs to keep it off the ground when in use.

And that was it. The pour spout can be opened to give some air flow to the base of the fire and trying it out today, the shape of the can keep the flame shielded from the wind as well Smile

The aim of the closable lid is that the can can be used to carry the kindling and the legs inside for storage, and the whole thing will fit in a standard holder or drop on the roof rack.

After everything is cooled down a quick spray of water, pour out the ash through the spout and the remaining kindling can go back in and you have a “Jerry can” again.

Not the most technical of builds but I like it, looking forward to getting out on a Christmas camping trip I’m planning for Wales Very Happy

I really like this, may have a go myself...

Maybe include something to hold the "lid/door" upright to provide a little more wind break?

Love the kindle storage and ease of attaching to vehicle. I love it all

That looks great, well done!
but the rubber trim doesn't melt with the heat? Wouldn't be better the kind of trim used in stoves?

Reminds me of the disposable barbecues we used to make out of 5 gallon drums back in the days of Series II Land Rovers. A cut down the full length of the drum opposite the end cap, then from each end around to half way around the drum. Bend two resulting flaps out and down to make supports and place the radiator grill from Land Rover on top. Remove end cap for increased air flow. Easily made in the field with tin snips, and when finished used whole thing can go back in the skip from which the drum came orriginally.

Thanks all Smile

Hey Lumi, didn’t melt on the test but saying that I didn’t run it for more than 20 minutes. It’s on the lid so mainly away from the heat, and only used to help the lid close better. If it does melt I’ll try the oven stuff, but that’s not hard wearing so not sure it would stand up to the knocks Smile

Now I’ve got the fire, might give this a go, have seen them for sale but it’ll be fun to build, (and test)

I like this idea. I'm planning one now! As above I'm thinking to have the lid upright, also get a grill to use as a BBQ. I also like the idea of using one as a bin, good call.
