2011 D4 SDV6 HSE
Hi All,
Unfortunately not quite the tone I wanted my first post to have, but in late May this year I bought a 2011 D4 SDV6 - and for a few weeks it was amazing until the engine broke! What's all the more puzzling is that it had a new engine 11,000 miles ago, but it's outside the limit of their time for any warranty.
Currently battling with a warranty company (bought an aftermarket one soon after I bought the car). Bought privately but no comeback of course.
Anyway, small matter (!) of a broken engine aside, it's an HSE with pretty much everything on it, and up until it broke I could definitely see what all the fuss was about with regards the D4s.
Hopefully the warranty company stop being and play ball (I've been waiting nearly a month just to have it stripped!). If they don't pay out I may have to make a difficult decision and move it on, but I really hope I don't have to, and that hopefully I can hang around this forum a bit more which through reading it seems a really friendly goldmine of information.

I assume it was a private sale? I mean I thought UK had fairly good consumer protection laws when buying from a dealer.

If I’d bought from a dealer I’d probably have it back by now haha! Yes it was a private sale, so no recourse. Plus the lady I bought it from was an enthusiast, and you buy the seller as much as the car. Nobody could have known it would happen - hopefully when it’s finally stripped the warranty company will realise it was a sudden failure and stop throwing “pre existing condition” back at me.

seriously unlucky to have a crank let go so soon into ownership (if at all ... odds really are quite low, despite "evidence" on here)
If you can pick your own repairer, Oval Autos and MMP Land Rover are the people I think most on here would chose if they could..

Haha yeah not the most positive first post! Hopefully it will be resolved and I’ll be able to comment more about how great it is!

What has broken, the crankshaft? At 11k miles a replacement engine should be run-in and good for years of driving.Chris

It is believed to be the crankshaft, given the noises that are coming from it. Thank you for the recommendations above, I’m in a little bit of a rock and a hard place - keeping it where it is gives me a chance it’s covered by the warranty (no matter how slim). If I take it somewhere else then 100% I have to pay for it.
Yes with 11k on it a new engine should have loads of life (knowing the issues these can have, this is part of the reason I bought this particular car). Still, win some lose some. Should have stuck to knackered old BMWs - I know where I am with them

Quality of a replacement engine or rebuild depends on reputation of the supplier, usually reflected in the cost. Worst outcome is repeated failure having paid for the best. I wonder if previous owner paid for a repair, or complete job with genuine parts.Chris

Yes, who did it, what was done? How much did the previous owner pay?
