Importing food from the EU - Spanish Serrano Ham |
|
I love Spanish Serrano Ham and usually buy a leg or shoulder at least twice a year, from a supplier whom I have dealt with for more than 5 years.
I was placing my first order since Christmas, on-line for my usual Jamon Cerdos Extremeños Cebo Campo "Paleta" when I noticed that the price had increased substantially.
On enquiring I was told that €25 has been added for "customs fees".
As I understand it no duty or VAT is chargeable, but this sum is added to all orders, as a matter of course.
I'm content to pay VAT on the cost of shipping & any non-food items, but consider this to be a rip-off; particularly as looking around I can get the same, or very similar, product from other suppliers at a lower price.
I feel disloyal in moving away from my customary supplier but €50-75 per annum is too much to pay.

Get used to it... everyone has hiked prices "due to Brexit" or "due to Covid" whether their costs have increased or not... the next one will be Import and Export taxes from Scotland when they become independent, not agreeing with this but facing reality, (although courier companies have been doing a pretty good job of that for things going the other way for years)... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

It's not VAT or any other tax it's just the charge for the extra paperwork and checking of such papers by the customs.

I bought a whole leg one Christmas as it seemed a good idea. By mid-February we were putting it in sandwiches, giving strips to the dog, etc. just to try and get rid of it D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Had an Aldi one at Christmas, seemed to last forever, very good it was but ‘saltier’ than those I’ve bought back from euro drive holidays.
