Had a similar situation with the partial restoration of my MGB about 8 years ago. Very well respected classic car restoration place, with lots of very high value vehicles in for various bits of work. We had a clear verbal (and confirmed in writing) contract on what was or was not in scope.
They did about £2k worth of work (on a £6k job) that I had not requested, but which according to them, "was things we would normally expect customers to want when doing this level of restoration". Sorry boys, that might wash with your old money customers, but not here. We had discussed some of it in phone calls, but I did not OK it, and none of it was in writing beyond the original agreement.
It wasn't a comfortable conversation when we picked up the car, but they did in the end honour the original price we agreed.
This story is on another level though.

Did better than BLFarrer (forum member, died a couple of years back).
Put his Moggie Minor in a garage for full restoration ... died before getting it back and his family have no idea where it went for the work.

That’s a bit (a lot) naughty. You would have thought they might have called/written to find out why he hadn’t been in touch for a while.
