Suspension comparison D3 - D4

I had changed all the suspension arms on my car last April, and also drag links, rear knuckle swivels, track rod ends, rear wheel bearings, ARB bushes and drop links. Everything that could make a noise, except the dampers.
I know I'm a fussy car owner, but I can't help listening for noises, especially suspension rattles! I got my self believing that the suspension on my car wasn't right, and that perhaps it needed new dampers, or more seriously, perhaps I needed a D4!

I spoke to nigethecat who is not so far away form me, as I know he's recently changed his D3 in for a D4. I was just asking how the two compared for ride. He very generously offered to come over and let me drive his new motor, so I could compare for myself.

He came over today, and I took his new car for a spin around some roads I know very well.
The conclusion - the D4 feels almost exactly the same ride as my D3!
Obviously, Nige's D4 is 8 speed auto, and more powerful, and the power is noticeable. This is the first time I've driven the 8 speed auto, and I can see why people rave about it. Smooth. So smooth, I hadn't noticed it change gear for the first 2 miles!

I'm happy there is nothing wrong with mine, that's just how they ride.
Do I want a D4? Of course I do!! Very Happy

Thanks Nige, you are a gent. Very kind, and trusting of you to let me in your new car. Bow down

I put new air struts/dampers on mine last year and it has definitely improved the ride quality over the poorly maintained roads around my way but the car also feels more stable when towing my 1800kg caravan. My suspension was 148k miles old when I made the change and struts had no leaks or anything untoward wrong with them.
Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

Thanks Ckassikfan, that's useful info. I'm sure I will end up changing the dampers (complete with air bag). There's nothing really wrong with mine, but I'm sure they're not like new.

I changed all four of my units over last weekend (o/s/f was fun )

2010 D4 170,000 Miles
And only did them because the f/n/s had an air leak..

They were absolutely past their best as the ride improvement is remarkable, I don’t feel like my door handles are touching the road on corners now

Tools in load space dont rattle Laughing

I got the Dunlop units from an online LR dealership at a reasonable price
Didn’t fancy sticking 3t on Chinese shiz
