Electrical connection to caravan |
|
Hi - I am hoping someone can help me.
I have just purchased a s/h van which has LED lights. To counter this I got the auto electrician to wire up a relay harness and install a P3 brake controller.
I have now noticed:
* that when I connect the van, the rear foglights automatically come on even when the light switch is turned off.
* the trailer indicator light on the dash no longer flashes.
Is this normal or has the electrician wired something up wrong?
Your opinions would be appreciated. 2005 SE TDV6, white; remapped to 185Kw; Black widow drawers & cargo barrier; underbody radiator guard; Mitchell bros tow hitch; rhino roof racks; Traxide duel battery system; GME 3440 UHF; Alpine W502 entertainment unit with front & rear camera, HiTv GPS & Hema off-road maps.

Looks like something is not wired right. A lot of Auto electricians get it wrong as they are used to Tojos.
I think a diode is required somewhere. Look on AULRO I think there is a guide to set up there. When you find the instructions give them to the guys who fitted it.
If you have LEDs on the van you will need a pulse shunt to stop them flashing. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Had the same problem not sure what causes it> I just pull the fuse for the fog lights when I am towing. Disco 3 and a Bushtracker that's heaven on earth!!!

I also have just bought a camper trailer (Bushboy) and it has LEDs.
I note that all the trailer lights function correctly BUT that the yellow indicators have a dim flicker constantly except when one of them is activated and then it operates normally!
I guess this is because it needs a diode?
Also my dash trailer light has never come on despite me also having a standard (non-LED) box trailer.
Is this something a dealership could/would fix?
regards regards
Peter

If your tow bar receiver (and electrics) was bought after the car then the trailer detection may not have been activated. You need a pulse shunt to stop the flicker. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

BUt as an Aussie car it came with the towbar/electrics allready fitted.
I will look out for the 'pulse shunt' regards

Had exactly the same problem with my boat trailer at the weekend when hooking it up to the Disco for the first time. After my girlfriend taking the proverbial p#ss out of me for my electrical skills (I had just changed the socket) I decided to get on the net and discovered its a known issue with LEDs and Disco 3 - plenty of threads on AULRO if you do a search.
Couple of products on the market apparently - I ended going with one from Linear Electronic Design - ordered it on Monday and got it today - very good service - just e-mail the link at the bottom of the webpage
Cheers

There are a couple of suppliers of the adaptors mentioned, Linear Electronic Design, as mentioned and thru Simon Arch from 4X4 Intelligence. You will need an adaptor if you have LED lights in your camper/caravan, etc.

had the same with the LED's on the trailer. I have sorted this out by using a couple (well four actually) relays , resistors and a switch. the purpose is to break the feed to the indicators as this is getting a 5V pulse from the light failure monitorig which causes the flicker. The relay - std 12v as used for spot lights- isolates the LED from the pulse but switches when the indicate signal is used. the 10W ceramic resitor provides the load - this emulates the lamp working and "fools" the system that all is well . the trailer lamp in the instrment cluster is activated - this is nessessary as there are systems that look for this when there is a trailer connected. not sure what all is affected as the dealer was more than vague when apprached. All they said was any modification would void the warranty. go figure in this age they should have a plug in upgrade for LED lights. I can supply a diagram if you need.
