Smell inside and leak
Hi all
Been asking my mechanic for quite a while but he’s too busy
I’ve got a gear oil leak. Not much but the smell is coming through the blowers and when stationary, the blowers can’t be on due to how bad the fumes are in the car
Mechanic says it’s a metal pipe that has corroded and is leaking gear oil, which is causing smell to come in
The pipe was metal, ribbed and about 2” ID and about 8-12” long (I think)
I’m wondering if this is a part I can repair myself? Or is it too hard to do alone?
Is it narrowed down to one issue or is it a stab in the dark? He seemed pretty sure it was this pipe.
Just can’t seem to get an answer always too busy
Meanwhile I’m choking and got oil dripping on my drive way ruined
It’s been a constant problem the past year. Just haven’t needed the blowers

I press the recycle button on the blowers, as soon as (or before) I come to a stop, and then leave on all the time.

I think you need to post a pic of the pipe to give people an idea.
Is the pipe steel?
Only pipes that are approx 2 inch dia are the turbo pipes.

These are the pipes on top of your gearbox/transfer box. You can see the long black plastic breather from the T/box, and then the gearbox (3 part) pipe all of which can be seen to run under the exh crossover and are anchored alongside the vacuum pump.
It's highly unlikely your metal pipes are corroded unless you have been using your D3 as a submarine.
More likely, (1) The rubber joint on the gearbox pipe has failed, (2) The plastic pipe from the T/box has failed. (3) There is a partial blockage of one or both pipes causing excess pressure to build up in the boxes. (4) There is too much oil in the gearbox and or T/box, which is being forced out of the breather causing the smell and leak, or a combination of all four!
It's tricky to get at them but it can be done with a bit of patience. Maybe try a borescope/inspection camera to have a look first and see exactly where the oil is exiting, but you're first port of call is to check the correct levels are present in both boxes.

One solution is to temporarily disconnect the pipes one by one and see if the situation improves. Hopefully that will eliminate the offending pipe. The transfer pipe can be disconnected easily by pressing in the red collar and pulling out the pipe. You can access the rubber elbow on the gearbox pipe from the right hand side of the gearbox! You will need to clean off any oil or the smell won't leave, and make sure you put those pipes back once the problem has been found. Compressed air can be used to blow through the pipes, but NOT into the gearbox end of the pipes or you will blow the seals!!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks all!
Yes that’s it the crossover pipe
I just got 2 steel ramp things so I’ll drive the front end up while I’m raised mode and her nice and high up. Then get some grubby clothes on and get my head up the gear box. And try these things.
Will update
