D3 engine surging/rusty rear crossmember
Hi All,
New to the forum and currently looking at buying a D3.
I went to look at one today and overall it drove fine and looked ok but there were two issues.
It was a manual 2.7 and at idle it had a very low level surging form the engine. I could hear it and feel it but there didnt seem to be any increase in revs.
Also the rear crossmember was quite rusty - no holes that I could see but quite flaky.
I would appreciate any input on the surging and is the rear crossmember a big job to replace?
Thanks
Steve

Walk away, there are plenty of good ones out there!
Engine should be rock steady with no variation in idle speed. Rust is a killer for these cars, if it's in the rear crossmember chances are it's elsewhere too.
Personally, I'd recommend the Auto transmission over the manual as it's a better "drive", unless you plan very heavy towing. Look for proof of service / maintenance receipts! These cars are around a long time and would have accumulated a considerable file by now.
Good luck yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks PROFSR G,
I am having trouble finding the good ones though bar a few that are at crazy prices.
Am I being unrealistic at finding a decent one at 5-7k euro?
Regards

Better off buying the expensive one, as the cheap one will be expensive by the time you’ve sorted it.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.
