Auto gear lever won’t move plus non crank. |
|
Hi everyone.
My 2005 se automatic has developed an annoying fault.
Sometimes it won’t start and requires a bit of a wiggle/shake of the gear lever before she’ll turn over and start. IID tool doesn’t show and faults etc. So I’m not sure where to start.
I have fitted a new Lucas brake light switch which seemed to cure the problem for a while but it’s came back again.
It’s completely random when it happens and as I say IID tool isn’t showing and faults. I’m at 133,000 miles and it’s the previous owner had this main dealer and specialised dealer serviced.
I tried the search function but nothing came up with the same symptoms.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction here.
Regards
Myke.

You could lubricate the cable from under the car (on the side of the gearbox)
Some people replace a bush which is easy, though different symptoms.
The car should also start in N in case you get stuck one day

All lubricated and not stiff in any way.
Is there an inhibitor switch on the gearbox.

A siezed pivot bolt can prevent the gearstick going into the right position, the inhibitor is built in to the gearstick mechanism Andrew

With the lever in park do you hear the click as the solenoid disengages the lock when you depress the brake pedal?
If not either the solenoid is at fault or the brake switch is not operating correctly.
You can monitor the switch with your IID tool.

Thank you.
The brake light switch is new and a genuine Lucas one.
I’d guess the solenoid is the problem. Is it easily accessible to replace??
I’ll check the brake light switch on the IID tool at the weekend.
It’s definitely not cable/pivot related as this is all free moving.

Thank you.
As you’d expect with landrover products, now my wife’s Freelander 2 is showing the familiar steering column locked fault and won’t start.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
So I now have two JLR products to fix

Steering column lock on FL2 is common. You can programme it out. 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

It’s looking more likely that the gear selector unit inside the car is failing.
The pivot cable clamp is fine and free so it looks like I need to dig out the soldering iron for the repair.
