D3 wont stay in D and occasionally 'falls' out of R

I have a bit of an issue with the D3 auto gear selection.

Every now and then its been a bit funny about staying in reverse but move it from N to R again and it was normally fine. Driving up to London yesterday at one point I heard the engine rev and noticed it had come out of D and nothing was showing on the dash. I pulled the lever back and it engaged drive again but it refused to stay in D.

I did the rest of the 200 miles in Sports and then selecting 6th when I got on the motorway. The movement of the gear lever seemed very stiff to move it from D to S.

Any thoughts? I think I have read that the lever mechanism needs replacing but I cant find the posts now. Or, is this a case of selector cable adjustment?

If I need to replace the lever mechanism, where do you get a good one?

Gear lever issues

Search for "Autobox Gear Lever pivot - How To" if you want to do it yourself. I had mine done by an indie for about £80. It solved the problems you described.

Diesel

Good luck with the diesel hunt. I've been running on fumes for the last few days. Round here, (Harrow/Stanmore/Bushey/Northwood) it's a real struggle.

Thanks! I need to get back to Cornwall from Herts. I have about 150 miles in the tank. I thought this nonsense would have passed by now but there is no diesel in Potters Bar today and there is a limit to how much I want to drive around to find diesel whilst wasting what I do have!

Well. Some good news. I joined the crazies and got up at 0545 to go to Tesco for fuel and got a full tank. Still had to queue though but they were pretty well organised.

This afternoon though, I unbolted the gearbox cover on the driver side and got some 3 in 1 on the mechanism and its moving a lot more smoothly now. I have ordered the new parts from AF (along with a service kit and new rear brakes) so will have that if it gets worse again.

Thanks for the advice.
