Refitting gearbox after replacing torque converter

Hi all, new to this page. Currently in the process of replacing the torque converter in my disco. I’ve got the new TC bolted to the flex plate, and the box is on the transmission jack and currently sat in position and about 2” or so away from the engine. I’m fully aware that you have to make sure the TC slots into the pump correctly or it will cause damage. The bit I’m stuck with it how to turn the TC so slots into the pump. I’m not sure wether or not I’ve done things the right way round, ie, I maybe should have put the new torque converter into the oil pump and lifted it in with the box, but never the less it’s nearly back together. If someone could please tell me how to turn the converter to line them up that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much
Brad

STOP!

Don't go any further, you need to fit the TC to the box (pump) then assemble the box to the engine.
Otherwise you risk serious damage.

Fit the TC to the gearbox first

You'll never align all 3 stages of the TC on the splines without fitting it into the box before fitting...

I was beginning to wonder if that was the case

Right lads, done it the right way round like you said. (Thanks very much) what’s the best way to turn the torque converter and the flex plate to line the bolt holes up with the inspection hole. Thanks

It's fiddly, slowly turn the crank shaft to align the flex plate. Thumbs Up

Unless you turned the engine the first hole in the flexi plate should already be lined up with the hole in the block from where you removed the bolts before. There is a round plastic grommet in the bottom of the gearbox if you remove this you can turn the torque converter with your fingers so that the holes line up with the flexi plate, insert the first bolt fully but only finger tight. Then turn the crank a quarter turn until the next hole lines up and keep going until all the bolts are in then tighten them all to the correct torque.
I always make marks on the front pulley with a marker pen when the bolts line up with the holes when i remove them.
it makes it a lot easier to line everything up when refitting the bolts, you dont have to keep getting up and down to have a look if its lined up in the hole.
Also i use a long reach socket and put a small bit of insulating tape inside so that when you fit the bolt into the socket its a tight fit and doesnt fall out, when the bolt is inserted in the threads you can then wiggle the socket off.
The socket makes it easy to insert and turn the bolts and ensures you dont drop the bolts which can be a big problem as they get stuck and can be a real pain to recover.
