Damaged mystery item in engine bay

Today I heard what sounded like a radiator fan blade clipping something in the engine bay. When I had a look, I found this bouncing away on the alternator belt. Seems like it was a tube that went to this capped elbow fitting.

Can anyone tell me what it is and what problems I should be expecting? Tube is worn through in several spots.

Thank you.

I think that's your front axle breather?

Any concern to keep driving while I source the part. It it tied up high now and won't be wading any water.

Just tie it somewhere safe, make sure pipe isn’t crushed and restricting air flow.

Should I be good to just cut the breather tube off below the damage, 8" or so and reinstall the cap? Or is a new breather tube recommended to have the factory length.

Factory length or greater. It allows the diff to “breath” so is set at the highest point of the engine bay to prevent water going down into your diff. If you shorten you’re at risk. Some guys eve extend them up to the roof for water crossing drives Smile you should be able to find some hose to extend back to original position.
