Man maths v swmbo and the finance dept |

Dilemma in the making,
On the way back from peterbro last weekend the D3 56 plate lost power, revs stayed at around 2000 until I tried for more then dropped off alarmingly, coasted over the rumble strip just as the coolant dumped itself all over the hard shoulder.
Flat bed of shame, first to home address then Monday had to have a patrol man attend to see if he could attempt a repair. So says the very nice lady on the AA call centre line.
So brief plan of action was repair the head gasket if viable or engine out jag engine and original ancillaries back in, either way it needs repairing, so along with that price and a few more jobs sooner rather than later and we could be looking at the top end of £5K
Or
Cut the losses and repair, part ex or sell private and buy a 13 to 65 plate D4
Prices seem a little crazy at the moment and a 17 plate D5 is out of the budget.
So any helpful suggestions please
Regards

prices on our 66 plate have been crazy high...unpresented...not sure how much further it will go...feel for your dilema.....then again you may be able to pick a bargain...certainly the d4 is a better option but not cheap wish you luck

Have you had the D3 long/got your use out of it? I'm not sure what they sell for as spares repairs - £3k? If those two add up I would probably be looking to upgrade to another car.
Prices are high for the newer ones but I don't think the older 2012-2013 models are commanding the same values so I would go for an older one that is in good condition to not get stung on high prices. Land Rover(s) : '10 Discovery 4

NON runner selling quick? i doubt it will bring you 3K
if you have time (and space an patience, enough and no SWMBO...) , maybe... in time
Math is simple without "greedy" variables (like, i want a newer model!) IMHO..
5K or 6K will repair your D3 with some extra maintenance, while the body is off anyway...
OR... D4 = 14K + minus 2K (more or less) = 12K (or more)
difference = 6K with also the risk (in the end) of a major repair within a few years... on the D4
+ higher depreciation on a newer motor (in the end)
it all depends on your wallet and mind set.... Best regards
Harold

Update,
Man math is going to have to step up a gear, the engine has just been confirmed as toast.
So the proposed straight swap of mine for a jag 2.7 and my ancillaries for a guesstimated £2500 isn’t sitting well with me at the moment. The musings were to get it back on the road then part X it for a D4.
So the head shed thinks it’s better to sell for spares or repair and buy the D4 at a discount for no part X.
The wheels, roof rack and rear ladder are coming off as well as the additional lights and removable tow bar.
What I don’t want to do is strip it and weigh the chassis in, all or nothing basically.
Kind regards

Where does the 2500 quid come from?
Only if you get an JAG engine for free, that will maybe happen…
The work of the swap alone will be more than 2000 guid…on labour…. Best regards

I think you will find the days of getting discounts on used cars part x or not are long gone, the sticker price is the price end of.
Buying a D4 in this inflated market is madness, I reckon middle of next year things will have calmed down or maybe crashed.
