Auto box leak

So I noticed a large patch of oil on the driveway today on investigation it’s coming from the gearbox, either the rear edge of the sump/filter or as I’m suspecting the electrical plug which I think is known as the vacuum tube?

I’ve cleaned it all up and ran the engine and nothing leaking so I’ll take it for a run tomorrow and get it warm and try and confirm where it’s coming from.

Can’t find any info on how to change this.

The bad news is you have to take the sump off gearbox
And that’s not straight forward
Either replace with metal (which usually leaks) or release one engine mount and jack a little

From memory this isn't as simple as it looks. IIRC it has to be installed from inside the transmission. Mine, leaked pretty much for the duration I owned it. I just learnt to live with it & give it a clean every now & then to prevent drops on the drive.

Pete K beat me to it.

I had a metal sump fitted to mine when I had an oil & filter change to the box, which as Pete says leaked. So ended up getting an original LR plastic one fitted again.

Thanks Pete, yes just researching that one don’t have a problem with engine and transfer box mounts but disco M recons the steering needs disconnecting from the rack! whenever I do that sort of thing the steering wheel doesn’t face the right way after😳

Opinions seem 50/50 on the steel pans leaking and the plastic are a lot cheaper.

Steering rack is right at the front of the car.
So I’m surprised.

I was surprised myself. After reading all the posts on filter changing I’m wondering if I can drop the filter enough to pull the locking pin for the vacuum tube?

That’s an interesting idea. Whether it would work in reality I don’t know.

Depends if there is anything protruding lower that the gearbox at the sides
Like exhaust.

Ur so welcome and hopefully it’s not too much hassle to change and fingers crossed ur be able to reach the locking pin

would be so kind to plse let us know how u get on as will be very interesting , must admit as mentioned by @pete and @skagg didn’t realise ref the metal sump issues , assume there’s a reason why JLR fitted a plastic one over metal , suppose the hassle will be getting a new gasket in there but of course the other guys will be able to advise u alot more than myself as Ive never done the job , see advanced do a composite one

Hope all goes well

Well been for reasonable drive today and there’s only a little drip of oil on the electrical plug so it’s coming from the Vacuum sleeve but not that bad, I’ve cleaned the driveway and I’m going to monitor it over the next few days.
