2010 D4 HSE Trailer towing |
|
Do all D4s have the various trailer assist/stability programs?
Do they all come pre fitted with towing sockets?
I've just done my first towing trip with mine and although it tows beautifully, it doesn't appear to recognise that there is a trailer fitted, no extra menus come up or anything and the camera doesn't change in any way, also when reversing the parking sensors aren't disabled and therefore blare constantly.

I think it was only later D4’s that have trailer assist
Towing electrics usually need activated so that parking sensors are deactivated

By towing sockets are you referring to the electrical connections ? None came fitted as standard but it was often specified as a factory or dealer fit option, this could either be 12N & 12S (two sockets one black one white) or 13 pin connector (single black socket).
If not fitted it is probably one of the easiest additions to make to the car as they are simple plug and play sockets, connecting behind the left hand trim panel in the boot (the wiring and connectors should already be there) if buying second-hand make sure you get both sections as there are two parts to the wiring, one runs from the towbar to behind the bumper, the second runs from the behind the bumper to the rear quarter panel in the boot, also a D3 loom will not fit a D4!
These days a 13 pin socket is the way to go as all trailers manufactured from 2013 (I think) and caravans from some time before should be fitted with the 13 pin connection.
If by towing socket you mean the receiver for the detachable towbar then yes, all Discovery's have this built in to the chassis, although if doing a lot of towing most on here go for a fixed towbar or fit a security plate over the detachable towbar.

Hi, I meant the electrical sockets. I was under the impression that they came fitted with 12N/S or 13pin as standard from the factory. It appears I was mistaken.
I have 13 pin on mine. I assume that it's witter as I think that's what the tow bar itself is.

Ok, that's solved that one then Swansty was correct in that it was only from around MY14+ that trailer assist was fitted as standard to all D4s, I don't know if it's possible to retrofit but you can certainly update the settings in your CCF to add trailer options with an IID tool (best investment you can make for your D4!), this will disable the rear parking sensors when reversing and also prevent the car fog lights when towing (assuming your trailer has fog lights).
Just be aware that the software on Discovery's has trouble recognising LED trailer lights and this can either mean the trailer is not recognised or the indicators flash at odd rates (not an issue with BMW's ), can be fixed with additional resistors. If the tow bar is Witter it’s highly likely the add on electric connection cables are not genuine, with none genuine the tow assist etc will not work even if you have it and it is enabled in the CCF(car configuration file). It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I don't suppose you know where I might find a wiring diagram for the tow electrics do you?

I have a 2010 and the first job when I bought it years ago was fit the tow electrics & tow trust bar.
Reasonably easy job when you're nervous around a new(to me), expensive & seemingly complicated car. I'd probably do it in half the time now.
I had it activated for cash while having other work done, but I don't get any tow assist etc. Also on mine it will only mute the reverse sensors if I plug the trailer in with the ignition on or the engine running. Puzzles me that one, but not really fussed about it.

Trailer sway control was available 2010 onwards, this works even with no electrical connection between the D4 and trailer.
If your trailer has LED lights the D4 will not detect that a trailer is attached. When it knows a trailer is attached the rear fog lights and rear parking sensors are disabled, no automatic suspension height change happens when changing TR programs (Manual adjustment is still available) and auto box shift points are changed. To get around LEDs on the trailer just add LED load resistors to the trailer indicator circuits. I actually mounted my resistors permanently in my D4 and can turn them on or off via a switch. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-...ost2916698 The resistors will only work if the trailer tow socket is wired into the D4 trailer harness. It's in the settings if you have an IID tool... as said may require genuine LR wiring to the socket... hook up a trailer hit reverse and you should see extra lines in the camera (I did on my 2015 HSE)... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
