D3 V8 - suddenly developed whining noise :( |
|
Evening all,
Car was fine yesterday, 120 mile round trip with no problems (apart from £40 in petrol!!), this morning I start her up and there's a really loud whining noise. It's present when I'm stationary or moving and the volume is related to engine speed. At first I thought it might be the torque converter as the autobox does tend to loose a bit of fluid and a top-up has been on my to-do list for a while, but I did a top-up this evening and no change. It's hard to pin down as these noises are but I think it may be coming from the engine area - perhaps a bearing in the alternator/PAS pump/aircon compressor.
Anyhow, I've done a video which gives a reasonable job of making the sound - anyone have any ideas?

TIA,
Andrew.

Apologies to Op but for some reason this is saying this is an unsafe site!

When I click on the link it takes me to something called hubnuts.uk.
Norton is blocking it as an unsafe site…

That's really bizarre - sounds like maybe something on the site - hubnuts.uk definitely isn't me (mine are rusty!).

Just listened to your video it seems to be something on the drivebelt so could be tensioner water pump or alternator.
It sounds like a bearing to me.Could also be the fan bearing.
Sorry can't be more specific 1996 Defender -died (now in landrover heaven😇)chassis to ashes , rust to dust !
2004 Defender td5 gone
2012 Evoque gone

Definitely related to the pulley belt somewhere … sounds like a failing bearing…

Type of noise you would get with an over tightened belt.
I would check the belt tensioner pulleys as a starting point.
