Lost communication with Instrument cluster.

OK so pretty familiar with the Disco 3 having crossed Southern Africa offroad in one on a 6000 mike expedition. However now back to the sedate Dorset Countryside. You do not see me posting too often as most issues I know how to contend with.

The Disco is a 2009 model year HSE TDV6 it loses communication with the instrument cluster after around 5 minutes of starting, hazards flash, HVAC shuts down first followed by audio & satnav with a message on radio saying system fault car shutting down horn works indicators do not which I suspect ids due to them being overridden.

Nanocom identifies loss of communication to instrument cluster but not any other nodes on the network. It reads all ECU's and faults can be cleared.

Trying not to re-invent the wheel and spend hours looking for faults the last vehicle took me 40 hours and tracked it down to a corroded connector on the Fuse/junction bo on a Peugeot causing errors on the CANBUS. I am sure this is a similar issue as once the car is stopped and restarted the fault goes away but exactly 5 minutes from starting the next morning it comes back. Could any of you Guys point me in the direction of the connector locations that the CAN Bus traverses, passenger footwell carpet is dry as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance
Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic >Very Happy for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

^^ what he said^^

Mine went last year, same symptoms, scared the daylights out of me when it happened, everything going dead apart from the engine. Sounds silly, but next time it happens, give the face of the cluster a firm wallop, not a fix obviously but dry solder joint means the connect not permanent and will come and go with vibration, pot holes or a good thump. I’d still send your cluster for repair, most of them won’t charge if they don’t find a fault.

D3 instrument cluster repair

Had similar problems with my 2009 HSE D3 (140,000 miles) instrument panel kept going dead, then half kicking in - then ok for a week, then playing up every other start up or run.
Took cluster out, checked for obvious loose connections etc, nothing visible, sprayed the circuit board with EC-90, slight, brief improvement, but then back to playing up.
Noted, luckily, that the headlights and indicators still functioned even when the cluster was basically blank.
Rang Patryk at TotalTronics, described the exact symptoms and he knowledgeably, diagnosed exactly what the issue(s) would be. There are, of course, several other businesses doing this sort of repair, but Patryk is extremely knowledgeable with Landrover cluster problems. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Cost £239 for the repair, which l posted down to him at Wareham, where he’s now located, and after a couple of days turnaround, it’s back and now works perfectly. If your fuel or temperature gauge micro-motors are goosed, he can replace, but at an extra costing.. The only thing he can’t “fix” is the main microprocessor but, apparently, that rarely goes.

Instrument panel intermittent loss of communications

Have just had the instrument panel on my Discovery 3 Commercial start playing up. After looking the issue up on the forum, I went to Patryk at Totaltronics. Price is now £250 for repairs, but he turned the panel around for me on an urgent basis with an additional £10 cost to cover the Special Delivery cost. Sent to him Tuesday, back on the road Thursday with a lifetime guarantee on the repairs.
