Gen 1 v Gen 2 mechanical differences

Hi,
Does anyone know the differences between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 SDV6 engines. Is the short block the same with just the bolt on parts being different, or does it have fundamental changes inside the engine.

What I’m really asking is if I had to replace and engine would I need to buy one of the same age etc
