Brakes binding for first 15 mins of journey !!
Hello All,
Could anyone let me know what might be wrong with my brakes.
For the first 15 mins of some journeys all 4 brakes are binding. It seems to happen mostly when the car has not been driven for a few days.The 4 discs get super hot and smelly. The steering judders over 50 mph. The brake peddle gets very sensitive. And the car is sluggish. If I turn the ignition off for a few mins it sorts itself out. It is happening more and more often. The pads are new ish and there is the correct amount of fluid in the reservoir. I am going to get though the pads very quickly at this rate. Can anyone suggest what could be wrong.

Sounds like the classic binding calipers. Need freed up or replaced, if my dim and distant memory serves me correctly.

+1 on the above.
Maybe worth investing a few £ in one of those Covid type forehead thermometers to check the temperature at each wheel after you've driven a while? That will tell you which brakes are actually binding.
If it's all of them then that's good to know but if it's just the rears then it will most likely be the EPB binding..
Either way, needs sorting asap. Find a good independent rather than a dealer too.
My rears started binding when one of them basically collapsed. Happened first on the motorway causing an alarming shudder/judder that made me think breakdown was imminent. Stopped and then it cleared until it happened again.
Let us know what the issue is..

Thanks for the suggestions. It is all four, you can easily feel the heat and smell brakes after a 10 min drive. I could understand one or an axle pair of calipers malfunctioning but all 4 at the same time ?? The weird thing is when you stop and turn the car off for a few mins they are back to normal for the rest of the day. Makes me it is something away from the wheels ??

Master cylinder sticking ? Brake pedal sticking ? Has it had regular brake fluid changes ? These are just suggestions, as I am having similar issues with my mates Volvo P1800S, mind you, it is 57yrs old, nearly as old as me D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

I'd still check out the temperatures....
Are the disks or pads OEM or aftermarket?
Maybe the disks have warped.
This guy Marcus at Disk skimmers is excellent, might be worth getting him out?
