D3 V8 Lumpy while idling

Hi I have a discovery 3 V8 and while it’s ticking over the engine is lumpy and what I would describe as juddery. I called the AA and typically it didn’t do it while they were looking at it. But he plugged into the diagnostic machine and nothing came up. Does anyone know what this could be? It’s booked in for a service next week, but I’m worried it might be something serious. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

On the diesel engine it can be caused by an oil temp sensor

Dirty throttle body, MAF sensor, and MAP sensor are all potential causes of rough idle in the 4.4L V8 just like our TDV6 friends. Likewise, we have an EGR system so it’s possible the EGR valve could use a cleaning too! The TB and MAF are easy to access and clean so start there. MAP sensor on the V8 is in the rear (toward bulkhead) and supposed to be a bit challenging to access.

I’ve got this on my list of spring maintenance chores.

Very funky errors are also introduced by PCV valve being all gunked up. Granted, I’ve never seen this happen personally but urban legends tell of engines with weird codes that magically themselves after the PCV saucer was changed.

I would also guess on throttle body being dirty.

Not sure about the MAF, mine seems to always be clean and I’ve never done anything to it. Perhaps my air filters are great but I doubt it. People using reusable filters (K&N in particular…..) seem to have it full of oil or something silly.

check its not misfiring, I had no errors on the IID Tool, but when I looked at live data I had various misfires. New coil packs sorted it.
