Some music MP3 Files not working on USB
Hi everyone
I have searched the forums and have found various issues around using USB for music playback and how memory sticks should be formatted, but I haven't been able to resolve the issue I'm experiencing. I'm hoping someone can help.
I have a number of MP3 music files on a Sandisk 32gb USB stick and also on a Kingston 32gb USB stick. However, specific tracks (sometimes from the same album) will not play on either stick. The screen displays the message "File or folder not available" and skips to the next track. I can confirm the following:
1) I have formatted the USB stick to FAT32.
2) It's always the same files that do not play. However, they play perfectly well on other devices.
3) I cannot find any obvious differences between those files, or a common factor (I've checked the extensions, bit rates and other file attributes)
4) There are no unusual characters in the filename. Just letters.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Yes but a little more extreme and annoying.
Tried numerous USB sticks, only one has ever been recognised and only then briefly. It played the first track then just stopped.
An old Ipod nano connects and plays faultlessly via the Ipod lead. I'm wondering if the USB connector in the centre cubby box has loose wiring.
Regarding your files, is the type and quantity of metadata different? Metadata holds the album artwork, genre, timing etc. information. You'd only be able to check this on a PC. Also check the file permissions, read / write, ownership etc. DRM, copy protection, may also be an issue, did all the tracks come from the same source?
I have the same issues on an MY12. Tracks all play on other devices from the same USB, fault never shows when at the IndiesPaul.

Interesting discovery (pardon the pun), USB stick is recognised and plays if the cubby box lid is left open. As soon as the lid is closed the connect device message appears and music stops. Bit of a pain as the lid then intrudes into the rear seating area.
Anybody know if this by design or the result of a loose connection? The ipod connection works regardless of the lid being open or not.

I had a problem with my DS. The LR handbook said format the USB in the FAT file system, but that has file size limitations, therefore some tracks wouldn't play. I reformatted in NTFS and hey presto, it works perfectly. May or may not be useful, but if you've tried everything else .....

The manual says FAT or FAT32, that it recognises NTFS is very interesting.

Yep, I was scratching my head wondering how I could get the USB to fully properly. The USB was formatted FAT as dictated in the handbook, the MP3s were filefile ex tensioned properly, didn't have a problem on a PC, but could I get it to recognise it in the car.
Anyway, the only thing I hadn't done was to NTFS the USB and then load the MP3s on it, so after doing that, I was amazed it work! I think a LR amendment will be coming out, I can't think the problem is unique to me.

I've just formatted a USB to NTFS, but it didn't work on my 2012 Discovery. The USB wasn't recognised at all....

Very strange! I'd try it out with different USB sticks. I've heard some just won't work in the LR system, whilst others do.
Obviously there is a difference between. LR systems when one car model works and another doesn't. No rhyme nor reason.

Same issue on my 15MY SE Tech, when formatted in Fat32 wont play some of the tracks, reformatted to NTFS, wont recognise usb stick, so re-formatted back to Fat32.
Had a play and found that large file sizes wouldnt play, by trial and error seems files > 7.9MB wouldnt play. Have re sized the files to less than 7.9MB, am now in process of working through the usb stick to see if anymore wont play, but with 990 tracks it will take sometime.
Also, if theres more than 1000 tracks it will play them when playing sequentially, but if you use the shuffle function, it will not select any tracks with track numbers >1000.
I think I saw in the manual that the system only supports CBR, rather than VBR. So if you rip your MP3s with variable bit rate, you'll have to do it all again with constant bit rate.

Stumbled upon this thread looking for a solution to the same problem. I tried everything, filenames, Fat32/NTFS, different USB drives etc. I even checked the encoding info between an album that would play and one that wouldnt - and they were both the same. I decided as a last resort to re-encode an album that wouldnt play and it now works.
I used AmoK MP3 ReEncoder, and chose a Constant Bit Rate of 192kbps and thats about it.

I also had a problem where just one mp3 file off USB stick would play out of some 20. Found this thread, converted to CBR and now all play fine. Thank you.
