Diff oil to Fill plug F=620ml R=1200ml |
|
Hi,
I have just changed the oil in the front Diff, I had looked at a couple of threads and U-tube clips and all had said "To the Level plug"
looking at doing the rear Diff next and low and behold there are mentions of
"its a Fill plug and Not a Level plug, same as front"
Clearly I should have done a bit more research, there had been discussions on
"Whats the difference amount"
To compound this the bottle of oil I already had said "1L left" and I used nearly all of it to get to the Level plug, so potentially well over filled
So I have drained it again and measured just how much I had put in, To the Fill/Level plug
Its still in the garage not moved so
My 2008 has 620ML to the Fill plug, so for me its a Level plug
I will be measuring the amount that goes in the rear Transit! 2019

Just fill till it runs out with both diffs - close enough and works fine.
Note the the fill amounts are for a completely new empty diff and one the diff has been filled and used it never completely empties - so refilling it with the 610ml and 1.1l does not result in the correct amount in the diff - just same a bit of time and energy and fill till it runs out the filler hole.

Hi,
the thing is filling to the plug level I did not know How much oil had gone in and if I had put 1000ml in, instead of 600ml in the front diff as I thought, then over filling by that much "Potentially" could cause problems.
The other threads I had read did not mention how much oil brings it to the plug level
I have now done the rear Diff as well, slight dribble when the fill plug taken out and 1200ml drained out
So I know for my 2008 D3 I can buy a 5L tub next time and use the Fill plugs as my level plug
Although I doubt I will ever need to change the oils again anyway at least its recorded now.

Well if you buy 2 litres next time, you shouldn't be able to over fill it by much.
And the castrol bottles have markings on the side. (The rare time I will purchase castrol.)

When I did mine a few weeks ago I followed the Haynes manual for how much I needed to put in and measured what came out, which was pretty much the same as the manual said.
