I like to use my FBH before starting the engine here up north and tend to program it at set times. Now that it is getting warmer it doesn't always start and was wondering if there are any parameters that would override a programmed start up?
This is in a 2010 D4 programmed via the touch screen.
Even pressing manual heat doesn't necessarily start it.

The most basic parameters are that it has to be below 5 degrees (or thereabouts) and you need at least 1/4 of a tank of fuel...
Obviously if it's above 5 degrees then there is no need for the FBH to cut in... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

You can’t say it that way….
FBH term is an “layout” for a heater, as there also electric heaters and gas heaters…
As an auxiliary heater, there is indeed no need for it to work above 6 degrees celcius..
As a parking heater, it can be wanted/needed at any outside temperature, why not?
With a Altox remote system i can start my Webasto FBH in my D3 at any outside temperature, as long as the coolant temp is below approx 60 degrees celcius..
As i do not have a D4 i do not know what or if there are limits with the LR switching Best regards

I wasn't aware of any limits. Though it would be sensible if it didn't startup in summer!

Well one of the good uses for it in summer is it still preheats the engine and if you set the heater controls to cold and your car has been standing in the sun, the heater will at least blow in ambient air when that temperature is reached. However this was on a different car and not integrated to the vehicles system.
I had a RRS with the simpler version (no timer) and could understand it not running above 5C or if the engine had a certain temp already. But if the heater can be programmed to start when you want, do the other parameters override the preprogramming?

I think theD4 does have a summer cooling function now you mention it.
Maybe it requires enabling
In the video it started up at 9C

Different upper limits for different W-Bus host addresses (IDs).
The upper limit temperature when it's started by the car (engine) is 5 deg.
The upper limit temperature when it's started by diag. tools (ID 0x0F) is 10 deg. (or 15, don't remember now exactly...)

Not sure I agree. Preheating the engine is great for engine wear. Starting my engine having been pre warmed is a winner every time....

That is debatable tbh…
First, the heated coolant is mainly in the heads, only partially around the cylinders, but definitely NOT in the sump…. And lower engine crankcase
Second the main reason wear is bigger on “cold” starts, has less to do with temperature but more with oil pressure and oil not being where it should be, because it drained out of the bearing shells….
A warm upper part on an engine will not change that…
If you want to combat wear due to coldstarts, you need to find a way to prime the oil through all the bearings before you start the engine.. Best regards
