Intermittent Steering shake ? |
|
Been away for a few days with the caravan and the car was perfect on the way there (120miles), fair bit of a solo driving while away, prob 150 miles.
Hooked up this Morning to come away and for around 10 miles, no problems. The at around 40 mph, start good get a steering wheel shake. didn't feel like the wobble you get from out of balance, but thought may have threw a weight, so pulled over to check.. All look OK with wheels, tyre pressures good. But, the front brakes did seem to be radiating a lot of heat - well it seemed a lot, but not having checked what they would be like normally, cant really say.
Moved on as wasn't in the best spot to stop and all was fine again. No signs of any steering wheel wobble / shake. Decided to press on steady, all was fine for around another 70 miles. Had been on the A14 constantly with just gentle braking, no stops. Shake/wobble came back, but not through the whole car, just the steering wheel.. Came up to a round-about, came to a full stop, pulled away and all was fine again.. Only had about another 30 miles home, so plodded on at normal speeds and no further issues.
Will call up the local specialist tomorrow, but with all the wealth of knowledge on here, wondered if anyone had any ideas.. know Disco issue ? Discs and pads alll good good with loads of meat left on them. D4 HSE Lux. my 2015 . Mariana Black

Sounds like a sticky front caliper… common problem I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

front lower suspension arm rear bush check to see if the flange on the bush is leaving a clean mark on the slot it sits in or put a wheel brace on a nut and see how far the wheel moves back when you try to undo the nut
had the same on mine got the mot guy to have a good look when it was on the shaker plate to see if anything was worn out
when i changed the arms it didn't take much of a wiggle to split the bush and the oil to come out, spent about six months tracking down the wobble been fine since the arms got changed
p/s 7-8 yrs is about the life span of the arms please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Callipers can be serviced (lots on here do it) but for the cost of a new one (pair) it’s a toss up whether it’s worth the time and effort… I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
