Itās only when you see the number of meteorite craters that you realise how vulnerable Earth isā¦ admittedly over a huge period of time and I appreciate most get burnt up in our atmosphere but even so..

And many traces wiped out by erosion and mountain building events over time. Also in the oceans there is only relatively new crust, nothing older than 180 million years if I remember correctly, so most traces there have disappeared down subduction zones. The moon has no atmosphere, so no erosion, and no plate system, so no wiping the slate clean.

Meteor Crater in Arizona.
I remember reading about that crater when I was a young lad. Always wanted to go and finally managed to visit in 2014. It didn't disappoint. It's a big hole in the ground, yes, but it's a mightily impressive hole in the ground.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Amazing to think it's 46,026 years old !.... I know because it was 46,000 years old when I visited in 1996 ! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Was there in 92 when it was 4 years younger. Loved the Painted Desert and Petrified Trees NP.
The biggest head count of craters cf area in the ancient shield areas (billion of years old and in the middle of stable plates) is in Scandinavia but that is a function of looking for them rather than them being there. Most craters have been wiped out but they do leave geochemical and structural traces below the impact point, which are now at the surface.
All ISTR as from when I was last in Uni which is a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Weāll Cardiff.

James Webb Telescope has been hit by a micrometeorite and although the damage is visible in the data, they reckon they can deal with it and still get the results they're looking for.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The newest (probably) craters are in Estonia where a meteor is thought to have broken up a few miles up in the atmosphere and the resulting pieces then each caused a crater. That's reckoned to have happened at a time when the region was already inhabited by humans, albeit several thousand years ago. That must have been a terrifying sight!Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Yes, clear skies are good for astrophotography but at this time of year it doesn't get dark until way past my bed-time!
Don't worry, an amateur observatory in Wales is defending us all Spaceguard. I'm not sure what we'd do if he spots a threat. TBH, I'd rather not know it was coming.
