Drawn on a conventional, and accepted, picture of the earth looks like this; so why is the shorter distance line about 2/3rd longer than the longer distance, what should a 2D map really 'look like'?

The closer to the equator, the more accurate the size on the map as shown by this animation.

think of a running track, and the athletes all lining up a the start, they are staggered to allow for the curve of the track meaning they all run the same distance. If they started in a straight line then the runner on the inside lane would run less distance than the runner in the outside lane.
or maybe think of it as the wheels of your D4/FFRR going round a corner. Wheels and axles are fixed but the curve of the bend is also fixed, so the outer wheel will rotate further/more than the inner wheel.
thankfully the earth doesnt suffer from diff wind up 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

I get it all, just can't believe I'm this old before I realised maps are 'distorted', I blame my dad for not letting me continue geography as a GSCE option as it was a 'useless subject'.....

I think much of the stuff taught under the heading "geography" is human geography rather than the physical nature of the world. Certainly, talking to friends who took geography at O level / GCSE that appears to be the case. You might have taken the course and still not known about this issue. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
