Noise in reverse

I suspect my gearbox may be on its way out but I will ask on here for anyone else's experiences with the same.

sometimes, when I reverse I get some strange noises, almost like when you have a fan spinning and rubbing against something, or maybe trying to grind a gear in without the clutch all the way down. I would say its more plasticky sounding than metallicy sounding but that's just my ears maybe. it changes with revs and is more apparent with load. just selecting R is fine but then moving off the noise starts.

doesn't always happen, but if I de-select reverse then go back into it, its still there, but then I can drive about for a bit, come back and it wont make the noise. not noticed the noise in any forwards gears (i haven't tried low).

any ideas?

Maybe, but then I would expect it to be noisy forwards too?

I've recalibrated the transfer box to see if that makes a difference.
