Noise on Startup

Good evening Guys

I have a quite loud clicking noise from the engine area for about 2-3 seconds on startup.
LR have told me it is the egr’s making the noise and every Discovery 4
Makes it.

It’s for slightly less time when it is warm?

Does yours make that noise every start?

Thanks
Steve.

Every idea based on perception is very free and personal, a short video allows greater investigation about if a noise is heavy or ligth (overcoming sensations).
Said that , even if not stated in the profile, the presence of egr valves indicates D4 diesel engine type, (V6? V8?).
Surely , in the V6 diesels a certain mechanical noise in camshaft covers area is normal for the first 2-3 seconds at engine start-up and only when the engine has been stopped for several hours (overnight at least).
It is a consequence of oil pump (delay) action in the first engine revolutions when all engine lube system operates at lower pressure.
On the net there are many references and videos, about oil pressure delay raising time at engine start-up.
It's also an indicator of healt state and wear for the oil pump itself

Regards
Alex

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have done a video of the clicking, you can hear it straight away on startup and it lasts about 2 3 seconds then goes.

How do you attach the video? It doesn’t show in pictures?

Thanks
Steve.

Thanks, so it’s the oil pressure building up not the egr that LR said.

So mines takes 3 seconds when cold is that good or bad?

How does it compare?

99 percent that is the camchain tensioner/s waiting for oil pressure to rise enough to take over from the spring.

Quite common on the 2.7.

Noise from camshaft chain tensioners and valve idraulic pushrod lifters working in low oil pressure condition
From 2 to 4 seconds it's normal , above this range the lube oil system need attention
Sometimes a poor oil viscosity may contribute to increase that noise, with some other "rumors" from crankshaft area.
Over all , your engine have a god sound Thumbs Up

Evening,

So just to update this, as my car has LR warranty I booked it in to have them confirm this noise is normal.

Well yes the noise is normal but the tech pulled out the oil filter and has found metal particles in it, the tech feels a bearing is breaking down somewhere. They have done a compression test which is normal but seeing as I’ve had the car three months advised I take it back. LR warranty have said they will only do something if some thing breaks.

The dealer will now check themselves and speak to the warranty company, my options will be they will buy the car back or fix. I like the car but I would only be happy with a new crated engine with all new ancillaries as who knows what the metal flying around in the oil has damaged.

Could this be early crankshaft failure?

Might be an idea to check your oil filter.

I think get rid would be my favourite option.
Guy I know mate had engine blow, lr fitted new engine but they did not clean things out and the new engine went the same way, apparently they do not want to know, sure there is more to the story like always, but you get the idea.
This was a few months back, from Kent as well.
