Late 2015 (2016 model)- LR4 - 42k miles on clock. Cruising along the M40 @70mph cruise control. Suddenly battery light comes on and then car slows down, got it to the hard shoulder. Managed to restart and now knocking from the engine. No other issues, oil regularly changed. Help needed thanks!

Get it to an indie as soon as possible (trailered if possible) and get it checked out!

Sorry have to question those who say take it to an independant as that is not a sensible move if you are hoping for JLR to help you out.
If you have a full JLR service history get it to the servicing dealer and get them on the case as they are your best bet to get JLR to cough up . It is fairly straight forward as long as you have kept it main dealer serviced as no other warranty will pay out on it as it has long been deemed an inherent issue on them so not covered by warranty apart from the original manufacturer warranty .
If the above does not apply then a very stiff drink will be needed when you talk to an independant.
Sadly been there and got the T shirt. Luckily mine repaired by JLR with higher mileage but similar age so all not lost.

with that mileage you have a good chance LR will pay and sort and only a dealer can help in that process..
if the car has been serviced etc with LR....your talking about £15k for new engine so its a biggy

So finally had JLR approve 80% of the cost of a new engine, was the crank and bearings spun although not catastrophic. Been driving the car now with a new engine and it purrs smoothly. Would there be any advice with driving a car with a new engine? Still too scared to take it abroad but long-ish journeys in the UK for now…..

Congratulations! I don’t think you need any advice on how to drive it as you will be very light footed for a few weeks/months, just be sure to have the engine oil and filter changed around first 5k miles. It can when others can't,

The only way to be truly happy/stress free is to sell it now.

Sadly, that what I did when the crankshaft went on my 2016 landmark at under 20k miles and 2.5 years old, new engine fitted by LR under warranty, picked it up from dealer drove it carefully back up home, it ran beautifully but every time the road surface changed, it was what was that noise, and couldn’t settle with that or the thought of what happens if it happens again somewhere remote in poor weather, so sold it and moved to another make.
In hindsight should have probably kept it and and kept money in the bank for another engine if needed rather than buying again. One of the best most flexible cars I have ever owned, still find myself looking to see what’s on the market!

im the same, although never had the engine failure thankfully. Really well sorted 2012 D4 but got too stressed out over the crank and also paying top VED and bottled it.
Of all the cars ive owned (and there have been many!) the D4 is the only one i truly regret selling and like you i still keep my eye on autotrader etc with the ongoing head/heart battle. 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Ours had a new engine at 140K. Now on 280K ish. Still used to take it to France twice a year until we got our D5. If they’ve done a decent job, keep hold of it. ☺️ 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +
