Do you mean the 'factory' case or some aftermarket overlay?

+1. Relying on a single key leaves you a hostage to fortune.
Whilst you arrange a second it would be a good idea to check that the emergency mechanical lock works. Then you should be able to access and start the car.
Regarding your original question a failed electrical joint seems likely. The strength of the radio signal is unlikely to be significantly reduced by the case. The battery connections are particularly suspect as they shear easily if the key is dropped. Replacement cases tend not to have the rubber battery support fitted in the originals.

Hi,
if you have an IId you can reprogram a replacement blank for £15 then find someone to cut the key blank or possibly transfer your old blade (not all fit the same)
here is a previous post doing the same and a link to what the key should look like

Unfortunately they are, we've had several key issues due to aftermarket / fleabay vanity key overlays preventing the car to be unlocked from less than 1m (although why you'd need to is beyond me) Whilst not JLR vehicles, they still operate on the same frequency (433MHz) and protocol so the experience is relevant.

key overlays are hit and miss as to accuracy of the replacement shell and key blade. First one I bought was fine and followed methods on here, several years later the second fob was on the way out I thought I coud get a replacement body and just switch the blade over again. Wouldn't fit, lots of fun and games after that.
I don't know if this will help but during that process I found Timpsons have specialist car places, not used them for this as I had a half done job, but might be worth a chat, they quoted me £55 IIRC for a new guaranteed shell case and blade, given the shell had cost about £20 I wish I'd known at the time as I probably spent the rest just trying to sort the second one out. For some reason Timpsons keep this a closely guarded secret, even some of their other stores were unaware of this service.
