Disco 4: transmission leaking breather pipes: solved!!! |
|
Hi,
I have ATF leaking under the car: smell on the way while I was driving my car on high revs for quite a while. 3000 rpm because I had a diesel cleaning additive added to my fuel. All of a sudden smell and on my driveway drops of red oil just by coming home.
I cleaned underneath the car and went for a drive to be able to see where the leak comes from.
There was smoke under the bonnet in the back. Checked under the car and saw that it came from the exhaust under the breather pipes. So the fluid was spit out of the pipes on the exhaust. There was nowhere else another leak.
I did some research and my findings are that it might be due to a dirty filter? This should rise pressure and thus the heating. Because of the heating the pipes spit oil.
Is this a logical reasoning? I could try to service the transmission: new oil and filter.
I was wondering about cooling issue too. And firstly to a leak in cooling pipes but they are fine.
But I left with the question why the high revs could have been any form of cause. And is it worth doing a service? Or is a specialist visit in place and he will of course do the service again…
Anyone whit advice or experience with the same problem?
Many thanks!!

Hi,
Want to let you know that problem is solved by changing transmission fluid and filter. I used a conversion kit with separate filter so I did not have to raise engine etc… with saw cutting pipe from filter.
Initially I did not know the problem was solved because there was still old fluid on the back of the engine and exhaust. When engine became hot then smoke and smell was still there. I pushed some paper cleanex by the pipes and after long drive there was no fluid on it. That’s when I knew the problem was solved.
On top that my lock-up problem was solved as well. Before driving at 40 mph on cruise the rev went up and down a bit. Now that’s solved as wel!!
Conclusion:
Spitting fluid out of transmission breather pipes:change oil and filter and use conversion kit! The dealer said they never change the fluid! Unbelievable. And yes, it can smell for a couple of weeks afterwards.
Lock-up problem at steady speed solved just by changing fluid! The dealer said they all suffered that problem. I should inform him bout this
