Knock from the V8 High Pressure Fuel Pump

I am trying to pin a noise, and also find out how many V8 owners have a similar noise from the V8 petrol motor.

At idle, there is a distinct knock that disappears once the revvs past about 1000. After some driving, the noise is gone, but switch off, then start it’s back again. There are no other problems, however, and I think unrelated, I do have a little bit of misfiring from time to time at idle, and a strong smell of unburnt fuel. The plugs have been replaced, and there is no breakdown under load so I don’t suspect a coil pack? Maybe an injector?

I do however also have a funny popping noise on start, from the left bank that I suspect could be worn cam follower, but as soon as the oil pressure is up it goes away.

Any thoughts?

Hello

The problem started just after I did the Timing Chains. I kept getting codes, went and had the chains done and the were slightly worn, but still ok. First start, same codes again. Turns out the plug to the cam sensor on the left bank was problematic. That fixed and all ok. To note, after the chains were done the motor is always rough at about 1200rpm. Could not find anything wrong. Then the noise started. Valve popping, and also the cam follower on what I suspect is the hpfp cam.

The Landy techs have had the car a few times now, 2 years and 40000km later and still can’t find the fault. It’s just getting noisy now.
