At least I think that's what they're called..
I'm in the middle of trying to remove the fuel tank, but now every bolt I've tried to remove is spinning
The spire nuts are rusted and have broken free - any suggestions how I can get them off ?

I had the same thing, i had to drill the heads off one of my bolts and then get the bolt out of the chassis with a magnet.
Did you buy new nuts? Andrew

They are Rivnuts. Drill out the heads, remove the tank, and then drill out the old rivnut. You can set a new rivnut with a special tool, or improvise with a suitable bolt and washers.
Just Google rivnut to find out more. I put plenty of anti-seize compound on the replacement bolts. You may have to install a larger rivnut if the hole is oversized by the old nut spinning.

Some rivnuts have a bigger outside diameter. Have a look at the set from screwfix. .

They're not rivnuts, they are M10 'U' spring nut KYH500100 my advice would be to use an angry grinder to take the heads off the bolts and push the remnants into the chassis where you can hopefully fish them out with a magnet or seal them in their rusty grave with some expanding foam...

I could be wrong, according to my wife it wouldn't be the first time, but I thought using expanding foam inside metal cavities was a seriously bad idea due to it trapping moisture?

It's diesel so unlikely to flash over in current temperatures and you'd have to be going some to get through the tank guard and into the tank without realising, plus the fuel would most likely short out the grinder motor causing the RCD to trip first...
How do you suppose it's done in a workshop?

That part wasn't entirely serious, but given the corrosion likely to be inside the chassis rails already, it's not likely to bond in any meaningful sense - but it would dampen the rattling of the loose bits... I think you'd get through several D3 bodies before the chassis shows any signs of weakening due to corrosion - a couple of blobs of expanding foam or not.
