Euro5 or Euro6?

Pop quiz!

If you were shopping around for a late-model D4, and had to choose between a late non-AdBlue model (which is up to 15-plate with Euro5 engines, if I'm not mistaken? Correct me if I am!) or a later Euro6 AdBlue model, which one would you pick? And why?

If you live in (or go into) a town then Euro 6 is the only one to go for, if you live in the country then the additional cost of the Euro 6 probably isn't worth it (IMHO) although you do get a better engine map and gearbox map...

As above... not quite as simple as 5 or 6, unless you really don't mind...

Different congestion zone charge, different performance, and really only advantages of the 5 are that they are in older cars so potentially cheaper and no adblu with a 5 (and thus more rear aircon examples around if that is important to you).

As said, you can map the gearbox in a 5 to be just about as good as a 6 (I have this) but having owned both a 5 and 6 the difference in performance is quite marked unless you map the 5.

If i were doing a lot of motorway miles I'd go for a 6, the engine and map suit that imho...

Euro 6 started mid 2015 so some 15 plate cars have it . Mine is June 2015 and has it.
It has to be Euro 6 in my opinion. Not sure about the price difference Euro 5 vs Euro 6.
Good luck with your search.

If your budget allows the definitely a 6, I went through a similar debate earlier in the year when purchasing my latest disco. The emissions zones are only going to get worse and more prominent, that is also a major factor if you want to go abroad as france in particular seems pretty hot on that. The performance benefit are also noticeable.

Hi mate

Often wonder when the ULEZ boundary will be increased again

Due to that I think next time I’ll get a petrol discovery , even think the D4 5.0 litre is an Euro 6

Seems a pretty unanimous answer! To be honest, it's just confirming the direction in which I was already leaning anyway - just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Presumably the presence (or not) of an AdBlue filler is the easiest way to distinguish between a Euro5 and Euro6 if it's a 15-plate which could be either?

I think they came in later in 15, most euro 6 are 65 plate onwards but I maybe wrong on that

The easiest way is to see if they have adblue, the spare wheel sits face down on advlue cars and the adblue filler is next to the fuel filler being the two easy ways to spot it

ULEZ etc aside, the EU6 engines feel so much more responsive and powerful.

Echo 6 for longevity under any further restrictions, resale value, and as mentioned seems they are mapped differently (better).

One very niche downside I encountered so far is when replacing the spare wheel winch housing, it is a fiddly nightmare as the tank has been squashed into that remaining space. The spare is flipped on Euro 6 models to fit around the tank (the wheel face is down rather than up) which is one of the ways of identifying one without opening the fuel filler cap!

But I anticipate that it's much easier to open the filler than crawl under the car to inspect the spare wheel.

Ha right you are - though you can see the tyre guard on Euro 6 models without having to get down in the mud... which on my one just serves as a reminder how much they cost. Big Cry
