detecting previous engine tuning?
Hi
A couple of months ago I changed the main bearings and Big end bearings on my 2.7 tdv6.
Yesterday a mechanic saw the pictures of my big end bearings and told me that a wear like this would indicate a to early ignition of the fuel. (same on gasoline and diesel engines)

He meant that maybe there was a bad engine tune done before I got the car. And this causes the wear.
Is it possible to detect a previous engine tune with the gap tool?
Or compare engine values like opening and duration of the injectors?
My engine does start to knock again on one big end bearing after just 5000km.

Hi Roland
I'm not sure on the answer, hopefully someone will come along soon with a bit of knowledge, but out of interest what prompted you to change the bearings? What mileage is your D3 on?

It is certainly possible to see if the engine has already been tuned... Just not sure if IID can do it.
The ECU has a counter of the number of times that it has been programmed.

hi Roland, i have had 3 TDV6 engines apart now..... 2 from a LR and 1 out of a JAG
the ALL have the same wear spots (without the black debris though) , in relation to the running hours
this would meant they ALL had a "tune"?? scientifically are 3 engines, randomly opened not waterproof by far.... BUT until proven otherwise i tend to not believe that claim/suggestion of that mechanic..for now..
i have published a picture with 120000 km difference between 2 of them them.. before
here is it again to compare...

but what is that black debris in the shells? if that works like emerypaper....Best regards

Low oil pressure. 200000km
ok, thats a good point. all of them have the same wear, so it wont be a tuning thing.
You already helped me.
I will report about my further investigations about my "knocking" sound in an extra thread.

Assuming you've changed the oil pump for a good one?

This car is a long story. In short, I have changed following parts in the last 5000km:
HighPressureFuelPump
all 6 injectors (twice, because after the first time the car caught fire)
all 6 glow plugs(twice, because the first ones where cheap ones)
timing belts front and rear (twice, because of the fire)
timing chains and tensioners
waterpump
oil pump (FAI)
Main bearings and big end bearings
all the turbo hoses
And I use 10W40 oil.
Still knocking in idle when warm.
And one thing that I couldn't change are the camshaft bearings. they are worn out. but the camshafts are running directly in the heads. so I would have to change them with the camshafts.
a never ending story
But.....SWMBO loves this car!
She never drives it, because its always broken, BUT she loves it.
