D4 pop and restricted performance

Hi all - just opening a thread to see if anyone has any thoughts on what might have gone on with my D4 this evening (before I try and read the codes in the day light tomorrow).

Joining the A64 tonight, accelerating off the slip road, heard a "pop" from under the bonnet, then a few seconds later, into restricted performance and a red triangle! Could maintain about 45mph, which got me the 4 or so miles home.

No rise in temperature, no smoke billowing, had a look under the bonnet when I got back, but nothing obvious. Will have a proper look tomorrow in the daylight and see what error codes there are, but thought I'd see whether anyone had anything similar happen and how many kidneys one might need to sell to rectify it! Laughing

Have you ever had the inlet manifold replaced?
The pop is a curious one, but just my thts. Any noticeable engine noises while it's running stationary?

Hi, no, I've owned it since May last year, and bar the MOT and service, had nothing to do. Its been running fine, although I had on occasion noticed an "exhaust type" smell in the cabin, only very occasionally. Absolutely no sign of anything awry today, just accelerated and there was this pop/thud from under the bonnet, and lost power.

Though it might be a hose somewhere that had burst, might still be, there's a lot of them I guess.

It did sound quite different running, but then it was in limp mode, no banging/crashing/rattling, more wheezy I guess.

Inlet hose burst or joint popped off is my guess although red try angle is unusual, look for black smoke when accelerating.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

pop was probably the inlet manifold letting go, I had this recently.

if your good with tool then no so bad as it will save you money, but when I was looking to have the job done, was getting quotes in the region of £1800-£2900.

in the end it cost me just under £1400 for both to be done, Id recommend replacing both, as guaranteed the other one will pop as soon as you replace the other one, also replace with genuine!

smell of gases could be a couple of things, EGR pipe splitting or maybe crossover pipe might be leaking.

Thanks for the replies, have just used my autel tool to read the fault codes and have got:

P2279-64 Intake air system leak
P006A-85 Manifold absolute pressure - mass or volume air flow correlation
P0299-77 Turbo/supercharger underboost

And B1C44-67, Rear wiper park position switch, but that feels like the least of my worries Laughing

Guess I’ll be making a few phone calls soon Sad

Pulled the engine cover, started ok but sounded rough, like the exhaust had fallen off.

Some smoke coming from the bank on the left at the back, and a sucking sound when I switched it off, accompanied by a very “exhaust-y” smell.

Feels expensive 😬

Had a cracking day at Land Rover Experience Dunkeld today in the new Defender

On home (D4 sdv6 2016MY) , came off the Roundabout at Perth and was just 2-300 yards up the road, not pushing hard but coming up to speed and a sudden POP …. Whoosh…. Sounding like from drivers side wing…. Thought it was a puncture at first and headed for nearby layby…. Then a few seconds later restricted performance

Nothing obvious under bonnet. Drove home in limp mode. At several points switched off and on but red triangle quickly reappeared. In 1-2 seconds. About third time, got amber warning light as well

Got home, left it a couple of hours and went back out to read codes with IID. Read codes, cleared them - re-started, no warnings or lights, few revs given, couldn’t bring it on. RE-read codes, nothing. Engine felt normal???

Don’t have time to take a drive tonight - will do so tomorrow

Sounds very similar to Matsquatch. I too would welcome any thoughts. #Hopingforahose Laughing

I'm afraid mine was an inlet manifold - it's currently with Green Oval having them both replaced.

Hope yours doesn't cost the same as a family holiday Mad Very Happy

These cars eh....

Excellent Big Cry

Had a wee look in teh daylight today. Saw fresh looking oil/soot splats above the inlet manifold and also down in the gubbins of it - would that ring a bell with anyone else who had a cracked manifold?

Googled some pictures and it looks like the crack appears in the same place continuously in all pictures I saw.. Went back out to my car and although its very hard to get a good look to absolutely confirm a split, it does have a suspicious line of black oil just where I feared. So I assume its split

There is a TSB for this fault as it’s apparently a known issue. Lots appear to have been fixed FOC or with partial goodwill payments. It was fixed on later models by inserting wire reinforcing in a new design.

The TSB is here https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...racked.pdf

Bizarrely my 2016MY VIN is later than thie VIN range of thsi Bulletin, so I have the exact same issue but with the new designed ‘fixed part Censored
