Not really a question but more a statement of happenings. I have a 2006 D3, 2.7 TD, 300,000 kms, originally bought in Spain but now in Sweden. Through this forum I discovered the existence of the FBH, unknown to me beforehand!
The weather has been cool here, about 3C in the day and -2C at night. When I start the engine the FBH does not start. However if I press the auto heating button, once the engine is running, the FBH starts!! It is all a mystery to me.
Any comments appreciated

A photo of this auto heating button would help, obviously not standard equipment. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Sorry , I didn't make it clear. The auto heat button is the one in the cab, for turning on the heat inside.

I’m guessing you have very old software Installed? (probably a good thing)
I think jag 2.7 work like this.
Does a red light come on, in the dash when the fbh runs ?

No. I have to step out and check the FBH exhaust. It certainly heats up the cab quickly.

The FBH won't fire up regardless of the outside temperature unless the climate control is active - i.e. in any mode other than 'off'.
Don't believe me? try it - with the vehicle running and FBH running due to low ambient temperature, press the 'off' button, the FBH will shut down, press the auto button or turn up the fan speed control, the FBH will fire up again (once it has completed it's shutdown/cooldown routine). Remember climate control is just that, set the temperature you want inside the car, the heater won't start pumping air around until the coolant is at a temperature where it can make a meaningful contribution, ther same applies in summer, until the refrigerant has a pressure differential, the fan speed and distribution will be minimal.

This is the curiosity. The FBH doesn't start on it's own. Only if I put the auto heating on. I thought it was meant to start automatically if the temp was low.

It will only start if the climate control is active, it's controlled by that system.
