Private Eye

Well, today I had to face up to a reality I didn't want to admit to.

I rang them up and cancelled my subscription, not because I'm fuming about their attack on the left/right/centre/monarchy/vegans etc. but because i have to face facts ... I've become a "collector" ("hoarder" according to SWMBO) rather than a "reader".

I've got (somewhere, in un-ordered piles/boxes all around the house and in the loft) every copy since 1996 and almost every copy from 1983 to 1989, plus many others.

But most, probably 90%, of the ones from the last 3 years are still unopened. The problem isn't that my eyes are struggling with the famously small print, but rather that my time to sit and read it seems to have vanished, coupled with my attention span fizzling out. I can't blame all of that last bit on my meds - and the additional Covid-fog only accounts for the last 6 months - but i find i'm more and more just skimming information - on my phone, PC , TV (and only selectively listening to SWMBO Whistle ) and no longer even trying to read printed words other than essential stuff.

The young lady that took my call was very surprised that I was cancelling, given the subscription has been running for 26 years.

Anyway ... end of an era? I'll still get the next 9 copies as they are paid for, so maybe I'll have a change of heart.

I used to get a professional magazine for the career I was employed with for over 30 years. I stopped it in similar circumstances to you, a two second flick through was about it, plus we all move on, what I did then has no relevance to now. It’s simply history, time to move on, live for the now. I think my yearly subscription to the retired association will be next.
