Light bar on main beam/ switched etc?? |

Hiya all I'm about to fit an osram light bar to my 2015 disco and my first question is, I'm aiming to wire it up via a relay to the main beam so it all come on together, but inalso considered putting in a 3 way rocker switch just to have a bit more control over it if that makes sense, but I can't help thinking what's the point, I only intend to use the lightbar when I use main beam or flash etc. and to use the lightbar on its own without main beam aswell is starting to seem a bit pointless like I say, so what's people's thoughts??
Also if anyone knows a good place to take a main beam trigger from other than at the actual headlights that would be much appreciated for the heads upđź‘Ť[/u]

I would fit one so that it can isolate the light bar from the main beam. I'm not sure, but I think you need to for the MoT, but not 100%. Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

In EU, you need to figure out first a. Is the light bar really road legal by itself, b. is it still road legal when on simultaneously with the main beam.
A is pretty easy to figure out, it’s usually stated in the data sheet and you tend to get some kind of certificate with the light… and it should have an E mark on it as mentioned.
B you need to calculate the reference values of the main beams + the reference value of the light bar together. The result needs to be less than 100 all in all.
If A AND B true then you can have the light bar on and do not need a separate switch unless you really want to. On my D3 I have a lazer linear 18 elite (reference value is 45, the D3’s main beams are 25 each, all in all 95) on the front and it awakens when the main beam is toggled. Didn’t bother with a switch. Works fabulously well in many situations.
I’m relatively sure something similar exists in UK… as you used to be part of EU

Some good points raised there lads thanks for that, my osram light bar is e marked and road legal I know that much, that's why I bought it, as for the Mot I rang a local land rover specialist who does his own mots and the answer that came back was that along as it was switched ie off main beam or a separate switch it was a pass, but I am gonna look into the reference numbers now it's been mentioned as I'm sure I saw that in the lightbar paperwork.

Right I've found the reference for the lightbar it's 37.5, anybody know the reference for 2015 d4 headlights atall??

It’s written on the product code sticker on the lights. There are many numbers but if you take a picture of it you can decode it with the help of the internet.

Use a switch to allow you to disable the light bar. Tbh, mine stays on as it adds….erm….emphasis if I’m flashing an idiot but there was a discussion way back around the fact that headlight alignment is check under mot, as the light bar / spots are set by us by hand, if they’re permanently on you may fail that way. 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

I have small switches fitted to isolate the top lights and the spots. Although I don’t often turn them off, I have found it useful occasionally. The glare I get back from some road signs is a bit shocking on a couple of roads I use so sometimes I just kill the top bar for a while.

If you fit a switch, the car can be switched back to "factory " and will always pass MoT even if you get a stickler of a tester or the rules get changed. .

The Laser LED spotlight install uses a small rocker switch fitted to the right hand side of the steering wheel column (or what there is of that in my old language). Gives easy access to isolating the LEDs which are super bright.
Seems a good setup..

Some good input there lads, thanks for that, I didn't think about the possibility of the light bar doing my head on some roads signs etc and the need to just want to knock it out for a bit so that's a good point, adding a switch it is thenđź‘Ť

You may need a can reader to pick up the main beam signal…
Do you have xenon or halogen headlamps?
Easiest way i think is to test the back of the lamp connections for +12v
I think there are some guides on you tube from Lazer lamps

All sorted now lads, after speaking with an mot tester regarding switches etc and looking at some of the advice on here I decided to go switched via the main beam and not bother with a separate switch(but I have left some slack in the wiring just in case I do need to add a switch), after a bit of testing at the back of the headlamps I found the main beam trigger fairly easy(I have xenons) and now all works a treat, so thanks for the input lads
