Gear selector module (hopefully)
Off she goes on the flatback .
And only the day after a big service (belts done on age rather than mileage, only 70k, plus discs and pades).
The rotary gear selector had locked it in park over Christmas but it freed itself before the recovery arrived, but today it locked into reverse and would not come out. Would not retract either when switched off and could not be restarted.
Have a Mapfre warranty so will be interesting to see how the cover goes. Won't be looked at until tomorrow and then hopefully there will be stock locally.
First time in over 200k miles of D3 and D4 ownership that I couldn't complete a journey.

There is a solenoid that releases a lock inside the selector when the brake pedal is applied. These are known to fail and can cause the symptoms you describe. I have taken one apart and bypassed the lock before but only as a temp fix to get it in neutral and started.

Hmm this has the possibility of being as simple as replacing the brake light switch...

Frustrating thing is that I just spoke to the garage I need to go to under the warranty (Mapfre) and they have had a technician working on it for almost two hours apparently. They haven't ordered parts and the supplier they use is on other side of country, typically two day turnaround for post but I just rang the dealer who is only five minutes from the garage in question and they have the part.
Hate when things are not in my own control as it is now likely to be mid next week before I get it back.

The gearbox selector was stuck in the driving position, after turning off the engine it remained extended, the engine could not be started.
A selector lock-controlled failure has occurred.
If this happens to anyone, DO NOT STOP THE ENGINE!!!!
If it is stuck in the forward position, you can continue to drive and return home.
After turning off the engine, all that remains is to dismantle the selector and its disassembly to reach the knob lock that is inside.
You can then manually unlock the lock and lock it in the unlocked position, you will be able to drive normally, only the selector can be turned to any position without pressing the brake.
I drove like this for a few days because I had to wait for new resistors.
To fix this, replace the two 1ohm resistors on the board.
I soldered the old ones and replaced them with ordinary 1 ohm resistors, the selector works as before.
The costs are £1.60 for 100 resistors and some time to spin it up and desolder the resistors.
do the resistors fail ? open circuit or short circuit ?
or is it dry joints causing the issue ??

One of the resistors showed 1.5 ohm and the other 0.8 ohm, I did not check the connections, I just desoldered the old ones and soldered the new ones.
But maybe it's the quality of the connection , because after blocking, when I unscrewed everything and reconnected it to the car, it revived, but then it blocked again, so I just set myself to replace the resistors.

I will add that even though the selector will be unlocked and you can turn it without pressing the brake, it does not mean that after selecting the direction of travel D or R the car will move, it will not move, if you did not press the brake before selecting the gear, it will show the "gearbox failure" error. The letter on the selector will only blink and the car will not move.
Then move the selector back to the P position, turn off the engine and turn it on again, the error will disappear.
So we will not damage the gearbox by selecting a gear without pressing the brake, because the car's system sees that we have not used the brake before selecting the gear and will not start the gearbox.
The selector without a lock works exactly the same as with a lock, it extends when we start the engine, when we leave it in gear and turn off the engine, it retracts and returns to the P position.

I posted a photo of the selector lock as it looks.
In the photo you can see a red sleeve with a cable pressed between the housing and the lock to lock it in the unlocked position.
The working lock is pulled away from the selector by the coil of the electromagnet which is located under the lock

The fist post on this link has an excellent write up and solution - I’ve not had a failure yet but did the manual release cable tie mod just in case it does.

I also made myself an emergency unlock, I pull the rope and unlock without unscrewing.

Yes - did the same but used a cut down bicycle brake cable ran it down to the foot well - keep it tucked in where the plastic meets the carpet.Land Rovers never get bogged! - merely delayed
