Smart Alternator ?

Looking to purchase and install a VSR split charge system.
However I'm aware VSR is not suitable for vehicles with smart alternators.

I don't reckon my 2014 D4 has one, but would just like to confirm [or otherwise] with those that know.

TAI Thumbs Up

Pretty sure my MY11 D4 had one due to way voltage changed when driving, wiser peeps than me will know if that continued. Thumbs Up

My thoughts too ... it's smart as it varies the voltage, controlled by BMS IIRC ?

However, I thought many had fitted VSR's ?

What did Andy Foster have in his setup ? (aside from more 12V outlets than Halfords sell in 6 months Laughing )

Seems more complex than I thought.

Did a search and came up with this:
Yes, seemingly the D4 does have a smart alternator.
And Andy Foster fitted a VSR split charger.

https://www.disco4.com/forum/split-charge-183444.html?

Kelvo (midway down the thread) is saying say that VSR is fine with the D4, and based on that, that’s what Andy fitted.

I still have my VSR fitted.

Three guess what Land Rover use on the Police/armoured D4s for their dual battery systems.

Voltage Sensing Relay Thumbs Up oops - just seen your update.

Anyway - the disco definitely has a smart alternator.

Options for split charge I have experience with are Traxide and DCDC. Both seem to work well - the Traxide gives you more amp hours as it lets you run your starting battery down a little before isolating it.

Ok now I need to locate the part number for that bracket. That would be extremely useful for mounting aux fuses etc.

Kelvo, do you have a link to the VSR you used? And did you detail your install in a post somewhere?

I’m eyeing up this Durite one in a 7mtr installation kit.
Hopefully someone will comment on this as a choice, but I’ll certainly talk to the company before committing.

Errant, I’ve got a few installation links from the forum, happy to pass over by pm.

Hi Ron

Hope I don’t mind me mentioning it but did u see this bit about a DC to DC charger on the later Euro 5/6 engines

Quote

Voltage sense systems are especially suited for modern vehicles as this type of system does not need an ignition feed or any additional wiring into your vehicle but for modern Intelligent smart charging vehicles with Euro 5/6 engines you may need to use a DC to DC charger.

Personally bought a renogy DC to DC charger fir mine and wondering if it may be suitable to urs , also has MPPT incorporated as I got a 150 watt solar panel in order to keep both my batteries topped up

Will have a look in my instructions to see if it’s suitable for the smart meter systems

Yes Gary, it should be a DC to DC system on the D4, but Kelvo is making the point that the VSR works just fine.
He and many others are using VSR with no issues with their smart alternators.

But I am going to raise a thread specifically around this to gather more input.
