First time towing with the Disco.
Been caravanning for a few years now and had a Honda CRV for our first van, then a 2018 XC90 Diesel, upgrading the Van last year, but was the first time towing with the Discovery last week. I now see why people rave about these cars and their towing ability. I didn't think the XC90 was too bad to be fair, but the extra grunt of the Discovery just made everything effortless.
Car was pretty loaded (dog, crate, mobility scooter, awning) and the Van up to around Max. Mpg indicated around 20mpg, but I wasn't hanging around, so well please with (though I know the comp will be out some). It was pretty blowy on Thursday as well, probably the windiest I had towed in, no dramas at all..

Nice combo there are a few people on here who tow similar vans and we would probably all agree that there aren’t many better vehicles for towing a caravan (or any trailer).
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I brought this back from Birmingham last weekend, never towed a van before got lost in Edgebaston enroute back to Cheshire, and had a row with the mrs. Got 30.3mpg back north on the M6 after a MAP/MAF sensors clean the day prior. What a machine

I’ve got almost the mirror image pic, with our van on my old D4

Both D3’s and D4’s have been great towcars
It’s now on the back of my D5 👍

Lrkarlak- can I ask what model xc90 you had. Model year etc
I’ve convinced myself that an xc90 will be my next tow car, the disco 4 is a brilliant tow car but I’m on my third and fancy a change.
Either xc90 or vows toureg I think but I’m nervous about the unknowns around diesel / electric/ hybrid debate.Currently 2015 D4 SE Tech, Corris Grey

I've had the Volvo XC90 B5d (mild hybrid) for 18months and used it to tow my van, its very capable even for a four pot 2L engine and copes very well as a tow car. Nothing will beat a D4 for towing (never had a D5) but as a solo car for other uses the mpg and even the dealer experience makes it worthwhile for me

^^snap. After having every model disco since 1991 I think my current D5 will be the last one. Been taking a look at a 2021 XC90 Inscription, diesel hybrid, and it’s pretty close on bhp and torque to my 2 ltr D5 so should still be ok for towing
I know a few have moved from LR to Volvo, so what’s the collective thoughts on the Volvo

I can't fault it tbh, very comfortable and decent fuel consumption for a big car, although when towing it drops to around the same as my D4, I don't have air suspension but I don't miss the fear of it going wrong. The 'mild hybrid' seems to growl a bit when pushing on and it seems to use a lot of Adblue compared to my LRs and other cars but my mate drives ARV Volvos and he says they drink it too?
My experience with Volvo and their dealers has me convinced I won't bother with any new LRs - I've a couple of old 90s to keep me busy
PS the Volvo forums are 'ok' but nowhere near as good as this

We had an 18 plate XC90 R-design. 2 litre Diesel. It was a lovely car overall, with a huge cargo area. But, I just found the 2litre engine a bit wanting, with the new heavier Van, especially when fully loaded. I would have had another had the deals been around, but would have tried to find one with air suspension, because the Buccaneer is quite heavy on the towball weight, which made it squat abit, again with loads in the back of the car as well.
Solo, it was much quicker than the D5 though and less thirsty obviously.D4 HSE Lux. my 2015 . Mariana Black

First time towing with the Disco.
Best tow car ever as far as I am concerned!
Solid as a rock - 20/23mpg towing Buccaneer Cruiser and 33/39 solo, latter on motorways.

^^ you must be driving like miss daisy asi never got anything like that out of my D4, with or without our van in the back. 18 mpg wa typical with van on the back, mid to high twenties knocking about.
The 2ltr D5 is much better mpg both towing and solo
